how to have a successful general practitioner doctor's appointment

caravan sonnet
In the course of my life I have seen more doctors and know more "medical lingo" than most people twice my age. Fighting for your life for over a decade makes you an expert in things that you may never have wanted to be an expert in. *smiles*

Overtime I have learned what to expect at certain doctors offices; including which nurses will laugh and joke around and which ones will remain extremely serious, how many pounds my clothes add to the scale and which scales I will weigh more or less on, and I am always prepared with my little notebook and a fun magazine (or two!) when I go to the doctor because as we all know a "10am appointment" usually means "hello at 11am". *smiles*

So in this age of short doctor appointments (the average appointment is 18 min) how do you have a successful appointment? Here are some things I have learned!

Before the Appointment:
(1) Don't forget to bring all of your paperwork with you (or an organized health notebook) and write down any questions or concerns that you want to talk over with your doctor so that you are prepared.

First Impressions:
(1) Always try to schedule one of the earliest appointments that is available. Less waiting time happens in the morning. Also, because doctors are like us at our jobs many can be tired in the later afternoons. In the morning doctors are at their "freshest" because they haven't seen 10-20 patients yet.

(2) Be on time. I know. It is frustrating when the doctors are not ready but still be on time. I have found that this makes the office staff much happier and honestly you usually will get in more on time in your future appointments if you are on time from the beginning.

(3) Speaking of doctors offices: a key to every doctors office is the office nurses and the administrators. Get to know them. Get to know their names. Bring small gifts (it doesn't have to be big but just a little something). Write a thank you note. Express thanks to them. So often they are doing so many things and yet get overlooked.

The Appointment:
(1)Make sure to inform the nurse (or the doctor) of any changes in medication (or vitamins or herbs) - this is also the case for any tests, labs, or procedures that you have had done at other doctor's offices. Make sure that your doctor is up-to-date. If possible connect your doctors online (in a my chart situation/connect situation) and if that is not possible bring a copy of the results for the tests or labs that you have done so that they have everything.

(2) When describing your symptoms, begin with the general picture and end with the specifics. Example: My stomach hurts. I feel nauseous in the morning.

I saw this in a doctors office years ago and there was no credit but I thought it was such a perfect idea. I started using that and it made a huge difference in communicating with my doctors. Instead of doing the opposite (starting with a specific and then getting larger) this truly has made conversations with my doctors easy and I have always walked away (when it is a doctor who listens) knowing that they are hearing what I am really trying to explain.

(3) Don't be embarrassed. Tell your doctor details. Be honest. It is honestly a waste of both of your times if you don't.

(4) Listen to suggestions that your doctor has. If you have questions about a treatment option or make sure to discuss this with them but do have an open mind.

(5) If you are having tests done make sure to ask when the results will be back and follow up with the test results.

After the Appointment:
(1) Follow through on any calls that you said you would make.

(2) Follow the suggestions that the doctor mentioned. If you have any issues call the office to speak with the nurse.

(3) Don't forget to write and send thank you notes!

I hope you find these helpful! Happy Thursday friends!

what you need to know about a home gym

March 27, 2024

A home gym can be a great way to get in extra work between public gym sessions, or save money on a membership in the long-term. But before you go splashing the cash, there are some things to consider first. You may spend the money creating a gym only to end up not really using it. From foldable equipment to assessing your needs, here are some handy suggestions.

You Will Need Some Space

First and foremost, you will need some space for gym equipment at home. If you are serious about home fitness, a living room stepping block and a yoga mat just won’t cut it. Gym equipment can be large, and a simple bench requires space for proper use and safety. Then, there are floor exercises. You will need plenty of space to try out barbell squat techniques and other high-intensity exercises. A spare room or a garage are the most popular choices.

Consider Foldables for a Home Gym

Of course, permanent use of a spare room or garage as a home workout station isn’t always feasible. A family home may need space for other things, too. Running is a popular activity, with an estimated 620 million dedicated runners worldwide. But the weather isn’t always in your favor. This is where foldables come in. Foldable treadmills, benches, and even multigyms are available. These are excellent space savers when you need to use the room for other things.

Focus on Your Goals

A gym at home should reflect the goals you are trying to achieve. A public gym has everything, of course. But how many pieces of equipment in a public gym do you actually use? Three, two, or even one. Many people go to the gym and only use the treadmill. So why spend a fortune on the best fancy equipment you will never use? Think about what you will enjoy and what you need. Buy the equipment that meets your goals and focus on them for the time being.

Invest in Proper Storage

Even with a dedicated room, storage of gym equipment is necessary. A lot of what you may use is very heavy and poses health and safety issues. Additionally, you need to put things away when using other equipment or when stretching, performing yoga, or even relaxing. A stray dumbbell is a good way to end up in the ER! Fortunately, most gym equipment manufacturers also sell proper storage shelves and cupboards for the things they make, such as free weights.

Create a Gym You Want to Use

Just getting into a routine and sticking to it is challenging. Without creating an inviting space that reflects your personality, goals, and comfort, you will probably waste money. Therefore, it helps to create the gym space you know you will use. Consider these handy ideas beforehand:

  • Your overall goals for fitness will determine the best type of gym for you.

  • Start small with what you need and add more equipment as you get better.

  • Strike a good balance between fitness, strength, and cardio equipment.

  • Buy equipment for exercises you enjoy doing that doesn’t break your limits.

  • Add personal touches to the space, such as motivational quotes and music speakers.

  • Make the space inviting with lighting, colors, and temperature control.

  • Add amenities you need, such as a fridge for power smoothies and protein snacks.

Any gym created at home will reflect the personality of the user. Public gyms are often very generic, but some are designed really well. If you are struggling to come up with ideas, visit a local gym and note the things you like about it and the equipment you like to use the most.

Start with the Essentials

There are a lot of pieces of gym equipment. But many are specialist pieces you will almost never use. Most pieces are designed for a specific purpose, and these don’t apply to everyone. For your workout space at home, start small and work your way up to more exotic equipment. This depends on what you want to achieve and could be as small as a yoga mat or a couple of dumbbells. Advanced equipment can be installed as you progress in body, mind, and mentality.

Lay Down Flooring for Safety

Perhaps one of the most overlooked aspects of a home workout space is the flooring. You may set up in the garage so you don’t ruin the wooden flooring in your home. But that concrete is very unsafe and uninviting. It may be okay for jumping rope, but anything else will require rubber flooring. Dropping a free-weight, for example, could end up with it breaking and hurting someone. And what if you were to fall? Rubber gym flooring isn’t sounding too shabby now!

Mirrors Can be a Big Help at the Home Gym

A gym space in your home needs to be inviting; we have established that. You can decorate it how you want and even add a sound system. But there must also be a lot of light to keep you focused. A dark and dingy space doesn’t appeal to anyone. However, a basement or garage may not have a lot of natural light, and artificial light isn’t the best. Mirrors help bounce light around the room, and you can check your physique and form as you practice a workout.

Do You Work-Out Better at Home?

A lot of us have bought gym equipment in the past only to use it a few times and then stop. One survey found that over 20% of men admitted to this. One reason may be that working out at home is hard. Studies have shown that we exercise better when surrounded by like-minded people or in a group, like at the local public gym. If you feel you get a better workout this way, then creating a gym at home might not be the best thing for you, and you will waste money.

Summary

You will need a lot of space to create a home gym for a workout that is more intense than yoga. Focus on your needs, the equipment you will use, and even the decor of the space to make it more appealing. However, also consider if you will benefit from your own space or a public gym.

review of park 2 fly at laguardia airport // queens, new york

March 26, 2024

caravan sonnet
picture not the property of Caravan Sonnet, found on the Park2Fly website

Happy Tuesday friends! Today I am excited to start sharing about our amazing trip and cruise a couple of weeks ago with my sister! As we were flying out to Florida I found some cheap tickets out of LaGuardia that were the best price (even with a hotel stay, gas, parking, etc.) and it worked out really well to coincide with a few doctors appointments in the city.

One of the major things though was finding parking that was affordable and let me tell y'all it was difficult to find. As a point of reference the airport parking (even with paid parking ahead) can be as much as $40 or more dollars a day (depending on which lot you are in). This was just crazy and would have made our tickets not as cheap and so I started to look around at what other options there could be. I came across Park2Fly and immediately loved the price and decided to give it a try.

Y'all. This was the best decision ever. Booking online was easy and you prepay a certain amount down and then you pay the remainder on the day of dropping off the car.

caravan sonnet

Dropping off the car was incredibly easy too. It took me less than 10 minutes (with traffic) to go from dropping my mom off at the airport to go to Park2Fly. After showing up, I parked my car, grabbed my items, and waited for the shuttle which arrived less than 10 minutes after I arrived.

We headed back to the airport and I was given instructions and a card on how and when to call for a pickup which I did. Waiting for the shuttle on the way back was a bit longer (about 15 minutes) but it wasn't bad and when we arrived our car was already waiting.

Overall it was a great experience and one we definitely plan to use again! This is not a sponsored review in anyway but I hope it is helpful for anyone looking to park at LaGuardia!

Let me know if you have any questions! Happy Tuesday!

the ache to be married

March 24, 2024

“May He give you the desires of your heart and make all of your plans succeed. May we shout for joy… May the Lord grant all of your requests.”
-Psalm 20:4-5-

In this single journey it can seem that we have had to give up so many hopes, dreams, and desires for the present, and if we are honest, we may start to wonder if it will be that way for the future too. The deep longing in our hearts to married cuts to the deep as we literally ache to see our dreams of being married come to pass.

Right now, as a single woman it can seem like as the days pass, so are our dreams passing us by and it can break our hearts. God promises that if we “take delight in You, You will give us the desires of our hearts”. (Psalm 37:4) I want to delight in the Lord alone but sometimes my desires and dreams for my future seem to loom before me and take my eyes off of Him. In these times I pray that the Lord would give me a heart for Him alone. When the ache to be married overwhelms me, I ask the Lord for comfort. I also pray that He would take my eyes off of marriage and a husband and all that I think I am missing out on because I am single and put them back on Him completely.

This is not about losing the desires of our hearts, but instead it is about surrendering to His love and His plans. Let us pray to do this with open hands, not gripping tightly to our dreams, but to the story that He is writing for us.

“For you Lord are good and what you do is good.”
-Psalm 119:68-

Let it be God's love that we most long for. Let us give our aching hearts to Him, “the Lord is good and your love endures forever.” (Psalm 100:5) Let us trust completely in His goodness, trusting that He has plans for us, giving us the desires of our hearts in His perfect timing.

3. The Time of Year to Resign Contracts for Teachers
If you are a teacher who is on Spring Break, about to go on Spring Break, or just finished Spring Break than it is also that time of year where you have to make the decision whether or not to re-sign your contract for another year. Do NOT make money the sole reason for whatever your decision is.

I was reminded of this while I was gone on our cruise and vacation a couple of weeks ago. I had turned off notifications from my phone, was gone about 10 days, didn't do any work during that time on my passive income streams and came home to TONS of notifications of passive income that had been coming in the entire time I was gone. More than four figures and all I had done was go on vacation.

Y'all. I can't talk about this enough.

Passive income has truly changed my life... after more than a decade of blogging I can definitely say that if I would start my journey again I would invest in the education to learn truly what passive income is and how digital marketing can change your life. The education is simply worth it. And even if you are not a blogger, you can still invest in the education to learn and all you need is your phone that is the beauty of this.

Each and every day I was amazed to see on my phone notifications of passive income coming in and I literally do not need to talk about it every single day or sell a program with upsells, MLMs or berating my family and friends to buy something, or anything. It is simply learning education and applying it.  Y'all if I can do this anyone can.

Maybe you are not like me and you are doing just fine with your finances... that is amazing... but I have to believe in this economy that anyone can't use passive income to bring in additional income for their tribe and those around them if nothing else.

Don't wait any longer. Start March off with starting your journey in passive income. Read my FREE guide HERE or if you are a teacher, read my FREE GUIDE FOR TEACHERS HERE!

What could passive income do for your life?? Start your journey today with the free guides! You are NOT going to regret this. What you will regret is not starting sooner. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out. This can be done from ANYWHERE in the world!!!

Another post that was fun to write this week was what is in my grocery cart! It is always fun to read these on other blogs and I hope that you share in the comments what is in your grocery cart! Check it out HERE!

6. FLASHBACK FRIDAY
With Caravan Sonnet turning eleven years old this year I thought it would be fun on Fridays to share some older posts from the blog! One of the things that Caravan Sonnet developed into was the key resource for those looking into cruising around the United States and World. Another thing was sharing the story of my fight for my life with my health crisis throughout my thirties.

It is not often that you are told in your 30s that you only could have months to live or that there is no hope for your case. And because of this, I value every single day and treasure the beautiful blessing of another birthday. So this year, we celebrated big and it was such a beautiful blessing. If you are looking for other birthday posts that I have written over the years you can find just a few of them here:
Hello 43, You Are Going to Be Beautiful
The Birthday I was Told I would Most Likely Not Live To See (Hello 40)
36 Birthday Moments of Gratitude
33 Birthday Moments of Gratitude

As I mentioned we just returned from a Disney Cruise and it is bringing ALL the feels because it was an AMAZING TRIP and one of the best times with my mom and sister! I can't wait to share about the Wish with y'all!

I hope that you have a wonderful Friday and weekend friends! Thank you for making this such an incredible space to come to and connect with every single day. I am so blessed!!
