When I went on my first cruise throughout New England and Canada I quickly learned that it was very different then packing for other cruises! For examples, cruises to New England and Canada aren't like packing for a cruise to the Caribbean. When I went cruising to the Caribbean my suitcase was filled with cute sundresses, lots of cute sandals and flip flops, bating suits, and adorable warm weather clothes. But unlike the tropical getaway that a cruise to the Caribbean provides, cruising to New England and Canada in the summer or fall provides a completely different climate.
When I took my first cruise to New England and Canada back in 2015, I searched for what to pack for this type of cruising climate and I struggled to find answers. There were tons of ideas for warmer weather cruising but not for "colder weather climates". So I searched to find anyone who had been on a New England cruise that could share their thoughts, talked with different cruise lines, and searched tons of travel sites for their thoughts on visiting this area of the world. The reality is that this area of the world in the summer and fall seasons yet it can bring unpredictable weather, beautiful views, and gorgeous opportunities.
I have taken two cruises through New England and Canada. My first one was back in 2015 and it was in the early part of October. You can read about it HERE. In 2019 my mom and I had the amazing opportunity to sail in August through New England and Canada on Holland America and it was so delightful (you can read all about our trip HERE)! The one thing though that held true was that despite the season difference (late summer versus fall) I found that the list here still helped me pack appropriately for these two different types of trips. I hope you find it helpful also!
So if you are planning a similar cruise, here are the top 10 things that you can't leave home without y'all:

The one thing though that held true was that despite the season difference (late summer versus fall) I found that the list here still helped me pack appropriately for these two different types of trips. I hope you find it helpful also!
So if you are planning a similar cruise, here are the top 10 things that you can't leave home without y'all:
1. Layers
With weather that is unpredictable during this time of the year (some days can be in the low 30s to the high 80s!!) it is important to pack clothes that you can "layer". I definitely threw in different coats along with lighter weather clothes (as you can see in the picture above) and the mix and matching of these items really helped me throughout the day!
2. Boots, Booties, Shoes, Sandals
Unlike the Caribbean where you live in sandals, you might want to vary your shoe "wardrobe" a little bit more for a New England Cruise. For time on the boat you might want to still live in cute sandals but time off the boat and the excursions that you choose might determine that you wear different types of shoes.
Taking a cruise to New England and Canada offers you a wide array of options as far as choices go for excursions and many that include hiking so don't forget to pack a variety of different shoes that you will need for your cruise!
3. Scarves
Lets be honest. If you have been around the blog then you know that I love scarves and where them in all different weather environments, but a cruise to New England and Canada is a perfect opportunity and excuse to wear a variety of different scarves on the cruise.
Scarves are also a perfect accessory for a cruise as they are lightweight and don't take up a ton of room but can bring a pop of color to an outfit, change up an outfit (by simply wearing a different scarf), and are the perfect addition to any cruising outfit.
4. Sunscreen
It can be easy to forget this necessary component of your New England and Canada cruise since you are not traveling to a "warm weather" environment but don't forget to pack your sunscreen! There are so many days where the weather is so beautiful and you will definitely want to have your sunscreen with you! THIS ONE is one of my ultimate favorites and it is less than $10 on Amazon. You can find it by clicking HERE!
5. Camera (and the Extras)
I use my phone for pictures alone with my camera, but still am a photographer at heart so I always bring my camera on all of my trips and travels! I have the Canon EOS Rebel T5i and absolutely love it. I purchased it in 2016 and am always amazed by the quality of the photos it takes. I love this SD card HERE (it's less than $10!!)

6. Extension Cord
Throw in an extension cord and you will be glad that you did! One that I bring along is the 6-Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip simply because it allows for several things to be plugged in at once which is a must on a cruise! (Less than $15!)
7. Umbrella or Rain Jacket
As I stated before the weather in this area of the world is unpredictable, but many northeast cities get 3 to 4 inches of rain during the fall months. Consider bringing rain gear or a small umbrella so that you are prepared for whatever weather that you might encounter! THIS one HERE on Amazon is a great travel umbrella (and comes in tons of different colors) With over 52,000 stars and reviews this is a steal for under $30 that you can use all year long!
If you are not interested in an umbrella consider purchasing a rain jacket which can work well when planning out your layers!
8. Purse, Bag, Etc.
Those of you who know me know that I have a little love affair with purses. *smiles* I have had many over the years, and love large purses- especially for traveling. For each of my trips I look for purses that I feel will "fit" the climate and the elements and that will be a neutral based color to easily match the clothes I am wearing. I also want a purse that was leather that could transition easily into fall. I saw the purse above and immediately fell in love with the color tone and the size of it. While it is no longer available (you could definitely try Poshmark or Ebay if you want the exact purse) these: HERE and HERE are similar in idea and size!
Also... if you have ready some of my other packing posts you will have heard me mention purchasing a Sturdy Purse Organizer and y'all. SERIOUSLY. Go purchase this for everyday life along with travel! I have started talking about non-stop and telling everyone about. Just the other day I was telling two friends that they needed to get one! It is life-changing! Hahaha!
This felt organizer (I chose the beige color so that it will go with any of my purses!) comes in 11 different colors and is less than $20 on Amazon (you can find it HERE). I love that I can easily switch purses now just by taking this out and changing it from one purse to another. SO simple and easy! Even if you don't travel a lot you will love it for daily life (for size reference I chose a medium)! For traveling mine was loaded up with tons of items and it was the easiest trip in the airports because of how organized it kept things in my purse! If you are interested in it you can find it HERE!
9. Journal, Travel Books, Etc.
Y'all know from my shop that I love creating and altering travel books and travel journals so this recommendation is probably not a surprise at all! *smiles* Some people like to pack travel guides to take with them on the cruise so they can explore in depth the ports of call while others like to bring journals on board so as to remember the special details and memories that are made. Check out the shop for perfect solutions for your travel needs!
10. Cruise Documents and Passport
Don't forget that you will need to bring all of your cruise documents and passport. Looking for a cute passport holder? I love THIS travel organizer and it is less than $15!

Cruising Tips:
Happy Thursday friends! As I shared on Tuesday, I am excited to spend the next two weeks sharing with y'all some recap posts from the trip that I took with my mom to Bromont, Canada 2 years ago! At the time I shared some posts about our trip, but with the way the world changed I didn't get to share everything and so I am excited to revisit this trip and share more! I hope that it encourages you to consider taking a road trip (in part or in whole depending on your circumstances) this autumn and winter to this beautiful place in the world.
----------------------------------------------
Happy Monday friends! Today I am excited to share with y'all more about our trip to Balnea Spa that we took last weekend and specifically the offerings and activities that you can do in your time at Balnea Spa. There are so many things that the spa offers that this post is a bit long so go grab a cup of warm tea or a cup of hot coffee, and sit back to read about this cozy luxury spa located in the beautiful city of Bromont, Canada.
If you are visiting for your first time you will want to bring with you a bathing suit and throw in a good book or magazine (unless you plan to sleep in one of the quiet rooms during your time which is also wonderful!). You can find out more information regarding what to expect on your first visit on the website by clicking HERE.
As I shared last week I am delighted to share today about the many winter offerings that Balnea has in the spa during the cooler months, so without further waiting, here they are:

Spa Treatments
During my time there I experienced the most lovely massage and it is definitely a service that Balnea Spa offers that I would recommend. As I shared on instagram and have talked about non-stop with everyone I know, it was definitely the best massage I have ever had!

After my massage I sat by the fire and sipped yummy blueberry tea and just felt completely relaxed!
Massage Offerings
There are different types of massages that Balnea Spa offers including traditional massages and specialized Balnea collection massages. The traditional massages that are offered include the Swedish massage, the Californian massage, shiatsu massage, lymphatic drainage massage and a Thai yoga massage (that is done in full clothing). In addition there are athletic massages offered for those who are athletes and are looking for a restorative massage after exercise and also massages for pregnant women. Finally there is a stone fire and ice therapy massage that sounded really intriguing. This massage is a combination of massage with volcanic stones and marble stones and I would imagine that the combination is quite invigorating and relaxing all at the same time. Another massage that sounded interesting was the Kobido massage which is a hybrid of both massage and a facial. This one also really intrigued me to try.
For the Balnea specialty spa massages there was several different kinds and you can read more on the spa's website by clicking HERE.

Thinness Treatments
Another offering in the spa area is the "thinness" options that include innovative techniques that the spa uses to help bring about muscle tone in addition to releasing and removing toxins. If you are interested in finding out more about these choices you can do so HERE.

Scrubland Options
Another area of the services that are offered is the "scrubland" area of the spa. These treatments are focused on stimulating the circulation in our bodies while eliminating dead cells. All of the rates in this section of the spa do not include the thermal experience.
This "scrubland" section of the spa was really interesting to read about because there are different types of exfoliation and products that are used. I would suggest trying each one to really find out what works best for your body. *smiles* One of the new scrubs that the spa was offering was a body scrub with verbena and Indian mimosa. This scrub activates the blood circulation and brings a feeling of lightness to it (and includes a glass of mimosa! *smiles*)
Body Wraps
The spa also offers wraps that sounded really interesting. Have y'all done a body wrap before? They have always intrigued me and the ones that were offered at the spa (different choices of essential oils, green tea and herbs, omega three wraps, and even a chocolate option) all sounded really amazing. You can read more about the different choices and package choices HERE.

Manicures and Pedicures
Finally another option to experience at the spa is for a manicure and pedicure. Y'all know I love both of these things and this sounded really lovely to try. If we had more time I would have definitely tried the shellac pedicure or the spa pedicure. If you are at the spa and you don't have a lot of time there is the option for an "express pedicure" which sounded really great.
Mini Spa Treatment Options
As a last note one thing that I really liked was that the spa also offered a bunch of different "mini options" for people to have. These were significantly lower in their cost than other options and so if you are on a strict budget or if you are wanting to try a few different items then this is a really great solution for you! You can get a mini facial treatment, eye care, hair care, or mini care of the feet and hands. Now y'all know that for me I would probably choose one of each thing and be very happy, especially the "mini hair care" option. *smiles*

Restaurant/Food Options
On site at Balnea Spa there is the option to eat in the Lumami Restaurant or to order (from the same menu) up in the spa lounge. For our lunch we opted to just order from the Spa lounge as we sat on chairs overlooking the beautiful property and for dinner we changed and ate at Lumami. For lunch we had chosen the ham and salad plate and we split it between the two of us. The portions are big and really good so I would definitely recommend this as an option. For dinner we each picked a yummy salad that had the most delicious dressing and sat by the huge picture window that overlooked the lake. No matter where you choose to eat the food you will definitely enjoy it as it is very yummy and tasty.
Heated Flooring
Despite the cooler weather and the stone walkways, don't worry... even your bare feet will be thought of here at Balnea as some of the floors are heated!
Activities Calendar
During all different months (with more offerings in the warmer months) there is an activities calendar that patrons can check out to be part of. You can find the calendar HERE.

You can find different things at the spa boutique that you might need for your visit (and to keep after wards), including yoga clothing, sandals, and bathing suits. In addition to this the boutique also has facial and body products for purchase.

Thermale Reserve
I discussed the hot tubs last week so I don't want to be repetitive but as a reminder there are some hot tubs that are mandatory silence and then one that allows quiet talking.
*picture property of Balnea Spa*
Different Rooms
At Balnea Spa there are a number of different rooms that they offer including three rooms that really intrigued me. These were the silent room, the aquarium room and then the BBC Earth/Movie Room. Each room had a purpose to it and there were a certain number of seats/cushions. Because of the regulations that I was under as to not disturb anyone in these rooms I was unable to get a picture of any of them but they were definitely intriguing and spending time in each room was unique.
As I stated last week, it was truly the most lovely day at Balnea Spa and I can't recommend it enough to anyone who might be interested. It is such a lovely experience and you will come away rejuvenated and relaxed. Please let me know if you have any questions, I am happy to answer them! I will be writing and sharing more next week about our time at the Balnea Spa so if there is anything specific you are curious about, please don't hesitate to ask!
A huge thank you to Balnea Spa for the complimentary stay and experience to stay at Le Pleasant Hotel, experience the Balnea Spa, and the delicious meals and massage on site. ALL opinions are my own. #partner #ad

Happy Monday friends! Today I am so excited to share with y'all a wonderful place that I discovered and experienced this past weekend, the Balnea Spa in Bromont Canada. It was absolutely incredible and as I shared with my instagram community, I can't recommend enough a visit to this cozy luxury place.
Today I am excited to share a bit more about Balnea Spa and then answer any questions that you may have! So sit back and grab a cup of tea or coffee and plan to be inspired by a truly charming place located in a wonderful city in Canada.
As mentioned above, Balnea Spa is located in Bromont, Canada which is an easy 1 and 1/2 hour trip east from Montreal or West from Sherbrooke. If you are coming from upstate Vermont or New York (like we were) then it will take approximately 1 and 1/2 hours to 2 hours depending on border crossing times. The drive over to Bromont was absolutely beautiful and you can see more from my story highlights entitled "balnea" by clicking HERE.
*picture property of Balnea Spa*
For our stay we were graciously given the opportunity to stay at Le Pleasant Hotel which was located in Sutton, approximately 20 minutes south of Balnea Spa. Le Pleasant Hotel is a partner with Balnea and an option of a place to stay if you are looking to stay outside the Bromont area.
We arrived at Balnea Spa shortly before the noon hour and immediately were impressed by the wide expanse of beautiful property and the modern sleekness that the buildings had. As we walked up the stairs to the check in reception area we could already feel ourselves relaxing amidst the cozy luxury ambiance.
Immediately we knew that we had arrived at a place of quality that had thought through details for clients who were coming. The space for the check in and reception is set apart from the actual spa, allowing the integrity of the quiet space in the actual spa and reserve thermale to be kept.
After checking in we proceeded down to the changing area/shower area so that we could get into our comfortable clothes and bathing suits and our soft white robes that each of the patrons wear. Even the choice of the white robe color brought a soothing aspect and atmosphere to the day.
After we changed we headed upstairs to the spa and lounge area where I checked in for my spa appointment and my mom relaxed in the lounge area.
*picture property of Balnea Spa*
I had made a massage appointment and I will be honest that I was feeling a bit hesitant. With my long years of illness my body is very sensitive and I was hesitant that a massage appointment would be the best idea. Y'all know I love massages, and love the health benefits but I was a bit hesitant to experience a massage in this new place. Honestly y'all I could not have been farther from feeling the way things would be. It was hands down the BEST massage of my life and so incredibly wonderful.
Ivan, my massage therapist listened to my concerns and expressly followed my demands and needs about what areas that I wanted to be concentrated on. He admitted that it was a much "different" massage than he had ever done, but I expressed how grateful I was that he was willing to concentrate on the areas that I was wanting therapeutic massage for.
After I was finished with the massage I came out to meet my mom in the lounge area and we split a light lunch and enjoyed some yummy tea and water before relaxing more in the day.
We ended up spending the rest of the afternoon just relaxing in the quiet. It was simply beautiful and absolutely gorgeous and wonderful.
One of the really neat things that Balnea Spa does is provide an opportunity to "escape" in a variety of different ways to promote ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation. In addition to the thermal reserves there is also the rule that phones/cameras are not allowed. There is no service and it was wonderful to see people truly in the moment, not distracted by their phones. (I was allowed to use my phone and camera to discreetly take the photos that you see here in this blog post and on instagram but had to limit the amount of photos out of respect for those around me enjoying the spa.)
Several of the hot tubs and areas on site are also quiet areas with no talking or very low voice talking. My mom and I both walked away commenting that in our fast paced and "loud" world, this was a beautiful thing to experience. The quiet was truly healing and one of the lovely parts of the spa experience.

I loved experiencing Balnea Spa with my mom and it made a really perfect "mother and daughter" getaway which I would recommend!
*picture property of Balnea Spa*
As our day came to a close at Balnea Spa we went back and changed and gathered our belongings before heading to Lumami for our dinner. We each picked a yummy salad that had the most delicious dressing and sat by the huge picture window that overlooked the lake. As darkness fell we commented again about what a perfect day it had been and how much we are looking forward to returning in the future.
It was truly the most lovely day at Balnea Spa and I can't recommend it enough to anyone who might be interested. It is such a lovely experience and you will come away rejuvenated and relaxed.

Please let me know if you have any questions, I am happy to answer them! I have written a post about all of the specific offerings that Balnea Spa has which you can find HERE!

Happy Wednesday friends! I am excited to spend the next couple of weeks sharing with y'all some recap posts from the girls trip that I took four years ago through New England, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia (along with some new posts from this time that I never shared also!)! I hope that it encourages you to consider taking a road trip (in part or in whole depending on your circumstances) this fall to these beautiful places in the world.
----------------------------------
Happy Thursday friends! Today I am so excited to share with y'all 6 important things you must know if you are planning to take a similar road trip like we did on Prince Edward Island (PEI)! These are in no particular order, but are all really important! I hope that these tips help you as you travel throughout this amazing Canadian Province!
1. There Are Only Two Ways to Drive On and Off The Island
There are only two ways to get onto Prince Edward Island if you don't fly or cruise into Charlottetown. One way is the Confederation Bridge and the other way is the Ferry. I wrote a ton about this on the blog and I hope that these posts are helpful to y'all!
Some additional posts about this:
// Confederation Bridge //
2. There is NO Charge for Getting on the Island, but You Do Have to Pay to Leave
No matter how you choose to get on the island you don't have to pay- but you will have to pay when you leave. The cost for both the bridge and the ferry are comparable- both cost approximately $50. Because we were going in a loop (starting in New England, going through New Brunswick to get to Prince Edward Island we drove across the bridge to get on the island and then took the ferry to get to Nova Scotia when we were leaving).
Some additional posts about this:
// Confederation Bridge //
3. Certain Roads Are Not All Finished and End Without Warning
One thing that we quickly learned in our adventures was that you could be driving, following the GPS and suddenly the paved road that you were on would turn to gravel or dirt ... or end. (Like the picture above shows!)
Sometimes you literally ended up in a farmer's field (like I mention in #6)! One time when this happened we were on a road that suddenly turned into dirt and ROUGH rocks and we literally couldn't go backwards. We were bumping along afraid the car was going to break (literally!) when we all of a sudden were back on a paved road!
We ended up finding out from the friendly farmer that came over to chat with us that the GPS didn't know that the road was now private property and the road for that stretch wasn't paved because he opted to not pay taxes. According to him, this is a general and common thing across certain parts of PEI.
My best advice is to understand this and get clear directions from locals if you are trying to go some place a bit "off the grid" (including some of the "Anne Places").
4. Getting to All of the "Anne Places" Can Be An Adventure Because of #3
I always wondered why on most Canadian Cruise Itineraries the only "Anne Places" that they visited were the Anne of Green Gables Museum and the Green Gables Heritage Home. The reason I discovered is really simple. Getting to all of the "Anne Places" (due to the roads) is impossible for buses. We saw buses struggle even in the two mentioned places above just because those roads were really narrow.
If you are looking to explore all things "Anne" on the Island, you will want your own car and should plan a road trip on the Island. (Especially if you are planning to get to the Anne and Diana Lighthouse!)
Some additional posts about this:
// Dalvay By the Sea //
5. People On PEI Consider Going From One End of the Island to Another "A Long Trip"
One of the things that heard a lot was how "incredible" it was that we were going to explore different parts of the island (that were more than 20 minutes away). For the people that we interacted with this was something that just isn't done on the island much. I am not sure if it is just a coincidence of who we ended up talking to, but we heard this from our hosts, a person at the restaurant in Charlottetown, our waitress in Tignish, a cashier at Walmart, a gas station attendant, and a couple of other people that we chatted with.
Y'all know that on trips I like to see as much as possible (you never know when or if you will be able to travel back to a place again) so driving an hour to see a different part of the island wasn't an extreme thing to me... especially after we were taking a long road trip. But be prepared that if you choose to do the same thing you may encounter some concerned wisdom. *smiles*
Some additional posts about this:

// Wind & Reef Restaurant //
// A Lighthouse Adventure //
// Charlottetown, PEI //
6. Cell Phone Service
Overall, I found cell service on the island to be better than I expected (and had been warned about prior to the trip). If you have Canadian Service on your phone you will be fine overall, but will encounter some "dead spaces" as you can imagine. I said this several times throughout my posts on our time in Prince Edward Island, but we found the people in PEI to be incredibly helpful and going out of their way to help if it was needed (even when we accidentally ended up driving through a farmers rocky field. Hahaha!)
Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and read this post today. I hope that all of the posts about our one week adventure through New England, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia has inspired you to plan your own road trip in the coming years!
