friday favorites- september 29

September 29, 2023

caravan sonnet

Happy Friday and happy almost October friends! I hope that you have had a lovely and wonderful week! Also, can I just say- how have we come to the beginning of October?!? I am honestly shocked.

I know that I have said that literally every single month the last few months, but it just seems like time has been flying.

I am holding onto these last few days of early fall here in the north country tightly and begging the days to Please slow down. I always dread moving out of the cabin because it is my favorite place to be and this summer seemed sweeter than ever. I am excited to see all that the beautiful fall will hold.

This weekend in upstate New York we are supposed to have some warm weather and in between closing up the cabins, our plan is that we are going to try to soak up as many beautiful moments as we can this weekend. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing I hope and pray that you have a wonderful weekend.

Here are some of my favorite things from this past week! First of all....

6. Embracing Minimalism
I said this in my last Friday Favorites post, but it becomes increasingly true each day.

Moving back and forth from the bungalow to the cabins and back again at the beginning and end of the summer has had me really considering the items that I own. This fall, I have made it a priority to truly embrace minimalism in different ways in my life and I am working on cleaning out a lot of things. It is a long process, but one that I have been truly working on recently and a focus this summer and one that I plan to take into the fall.

It can be hard when you are walking through extreme grief as we did and also then doing cross country moves to do this... I plan to explore this more in blog posts, but this upcoming fall this is definitely a focus.
caravan sonnet
7. Fall Bucket List for the Lake Champlain Area
I am so excited to share just a few of my favorite and fun fall activities around the Lake Champlain area that should definitely be added to your bucket list if you are visiting- OR- to inspire you wherever you live!
caravan sonnet
8. This show.
I honestly still don't have words. I mentioned in the last post and am still processing.

I have to write a review but it was one of the most powerful things I have ever watched. If you haven't watched it yet, set aside the time and do so. It will inspire you to your core.

9. FLASHBACK FRIDAY
With Caravan Sonnet turning ten years old I thought it would be fun on Fridays to share some older posts from the blog! One of the things that Caravan Sonnet developed into was a a resource for those looking for road trip itineraries around the United States and World.

One of the most popular posts is one that I wrote back in 2017 about the one week New England, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia Itinerary that I planned and took starting on this date 6 years ago!  This extremely popular post went viral several years ago (!!) and if you are looking at planning a similar trip you can find the post HERE!

I am in the midst of planning a really fun fall road trip that I can't wait to share more with y'all about in the next few weeks!

26 ways to help a friend with a chronic illness

Each week I receive hundreds of emails from compassionate and kind people asking how they can be a good friend to someone with a chronic illness. These people are true treasures as they want to practically help a friend who is walking the difficult road of chronic illness. I am definitely not an expert at all, but the things that I have listed below are things that friends have mentioned to me that have been wonderful or I have personally experienced that have truly touched my heart and my life in my journey with health issues.

1. Listen without judgment.
The journey of chronic illness has ins and outs that unless you are living and walking that road is impossible to understand. I once shared about the long and winding road to healing with Lyme disease (click HERE to read) but that post is true for anyone walking through a chronic illness. Your listening ear is the most important gift that you could offer in the journey.

2. Understand that Chronic Illness is a long-term issue.
Walk in with your eyes wide open. The hardest thing in this journey can be friends who leave so truly understand that it is a long term thing.

3. Listen without offering advice (unless asked).
When you offer unsolicited advice, it can come across as a lecture- even if that is not your intent. Someone once said: "Assume that we have heard all of the tips on living healthier and leave it at that." I couldn't have said it any better.

4. Offer monetary help if possible.
Even with insurance patients with chronic diseases spend thousands and thousands of dollars trying to get healthy. Many people with Chronic Illness, like myself, have already gone through all available resources. These types of gifts do not have to be large either. Someone gave me a five dollar gift card to Target in the middle of my journey that helped purchase necessities. Such a blessing! Truly gift cards are wonderful if that is an option for you to give!

5. Understand that Chronic Illness' are complex.

6. Send an email or a text just to say "hello".
It doesn't have to be long or take a lot of time but sending a quick "thank you" is truly a blessing.

7. Help with housework or yard work.
One friend of mine has a friend who comes over weekly to mow her lawn since her husband fell ill. This gift has been a priceless help during an incredibly difficult time. If you don't have the time for housework or yard work consider spending the money on purchasing these services as a gift.

8. Leave a phone message.
One of my dear friends always leaves her message with adding in precious words of "you don't have to call back...". Such a precious gift filled with understanding.

9. Pick up (and purchase if possible) prescriptions.

10. Pick up children from school or to create a carpool.

11. Offer your gifts that you have.
A friend of mine has a friend who is a masseuse and offers a massage free of charge to her friend once a month. Another friend runs a house-cleaning business and offers her services free of charge once a month.

12. Take children to church or other events.
Many times those with chronic conditions are forced to miss out on everyday and important events. An offer to take their children would give them a piece of mind.

13. Send cards but not "get well" cards.

14. Send care packages.

15. Buy nice pajamas.
Those with chronic illnesses spend a lot of time in bed or in the hospital and nice pajamas are always a lovely gift.

16. Magazines are a lovely gift.

17. Be very careful about your timing.
One day when I ended up in the emergency room and I texted a few friends asking for prayer. One friend responded back asking me if I truly had faith that I would be healed because then I wouldn't need prayer. I am sure it was not meant to be hurtful but the timing could not have been any worse. It came as the nurse attempted her sixth stick for an IV and I couldn't stop throwing up. I expected some encouraging words only to read those words which were incredibly hurtful. Timing, as the old adage says truly is everything.

18. Pick up groceries.

19. Come and just sit or watch TV or a movie with your friend.

20. Flowers.
Is there ever a wrong time for flowers? *smiles*

21. Don't say: "But you don't look sick" or... "But you don't act sick".
One of the most read posts on my blog is my post entitled, "But You Don't Act Sick" (click HERE to read). I am not sure what a sick person is supposed to act or look like but the reality is that there is a reason many illnesses are called "invisible illnesses".

22. Treat your friend as a whole person.
The best gifts I am offered are by my closest friends and family who treat me as a whole person. I am more than my illness. I have a lot of other things going on in life and while my illness may be central to a lot of the issues, I still like to talk about normal everyday things.

23. Offer a gift card to buy movies or TV seasons or purchase a Netflix, Pureflix, or Hulu subscription.
This definitely can help pass the time.

24. Respect the limitations and boundaries of your friend.

25. Food and meals are always appreciated.
One of the hardest parts of  dealing with a chronic illness is not having the energy to cook. Meals are a gift. One idea is to offer a meal once a month which would be a complete blessing for someone.

26. Before you deliver food check with your friend about allergies (and timing). Lots of people with chronic illnesses have food allergies. Make sure to check with them before you purchase or deliver food.

my favorite hallmark movies to curl up with this autumn

September 27, 2023

 caravan sonnet

Happy Wednesday friends! Today I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite hallmark movies to curl up and watch during the fall season. It is true that Hallmark often focuses on Christmas and the Holiday movies but there are several fall themed ones that are often overlooked and are so cute and adorable. If you are looking for sweet, feel-good, and fun autumn movies to watch this season here are a few of my favorites...

caravan sonnet

1. Harvest Love

Hallmark Description: A widowed surgeon visits her family’s pear orchard in hopes of taking a break from her overbooked life and reconnecting with her distant son. She starts to fall for the farm manager, Will, who is growing a new hybrid pear and teaches her the importance of her heritage. Stars Jen Lilley and Ryan Paevey.

Y'all I came across this movie on Amazon and I immediately thought it was one of the sweetest movies. I have high respect for both actors and the work that they do outside of acting and to see them in this sweet and adorable movie together made this for an easy pick for one of my favorite hallmark movies to curl up with this autumn. Also... can I just say that a man who loves the outdoors obviously would make my heart smile. *smiles*

Find it on Amazon HERE!

Other movies I loved with these two actors...

Don't Go Breaking My Heart

Unleashing Mr. Darcy

From Friend to Fiance'

Winter Love Story

USS Christmas

2. Bottled with Love

Hallmark Description: After being stood up, Abbey gets inspired to open her heart in a letter, put it in a bottle and toss it out to sea. Months later, a man fishing discovers it and opts to reach out. Starring Bethany Joy Lenz and Andrew Walker.

I think that this movie originally premiered in the Spring, but it feels like a fall movie to me and I had to include it because it is so cute. Again, I have high respect for both actors and the work that they do outside of acting and to see them in this sweet and adorable movie together made this for an easy pick for one of my favorite hallmark movies to curl up with this autumn. Also... anyone who knows me well remembers all of the notes in bottles that were put into the lake back in my teenage days and well understands why I would love this movie. *smiles*

Find it on Amazon HERE!

Other movies I loved with these two actors...

Snowed Inn Christmas (Starring Bethany Joy and Andrew together)

Three Wise Men and a Baby

The Christmas Secret

Five Star Christmas

caravan sonnet

3-5. All of My Heart (The Trilogy)

3. All of My Heart

Hallmark Description: A young caterer’s life suddenly changes course when she inherits a country home and learns she must share it with a career-obsessed Wall Street trader. At first, these opposites do not attract, but feelings begin to change when they find themselves having to work side-by-side to restore their newly acquired home.

4. All of My Heart: Inn Love

Hallmark Description: Brian and Jenny are engaged and preparing for the grand opening of their bed and breakfast. But when a big storm hits Bucks County, all their plans end up sopping wet! With funds running low and time running out, Brian agrees to go back to Wall Street to make quick cash, while Jenny scrambles to keep the opening on track. Stars Lacey Chabert and Brennan Elliott.

5. All of My Heart: The Wedding

Hallmark Description: Jenny and Brian are planning their incredibly romantic wedding. Emily’s Country Inn is filled to capacity with happy guests. Then a distant relative of Emily’s arrives and she stakes a claim to the house. The pressure is on as Jenny and Brian try to raise enough money to hang onto their home. They go for broke expanding her company, Jenny’s Home Baked. Brian even considers a return to Wall Street. All of the wonderful friends they made in Bucks County are worried about their favorite couple, trying to figure out how to help. Jenny and Brian’s enduring love will once again be tested as the wedding day approaches and they struggle to keep the house that brought them together. Starring Lacey Chabert and Brennan Elliott.

These three movies were so adorable... and y'all the goats. So cute. Again, I have high respect for both actors and the work that they do outside of acting and to see them in these sweet and adorable movies together made this for an easy pick for a few of my favorite hallmark movies to curl up with this autumn.

Find them on Amazon HERE!

Other movies I loved with these two actors...

Crossword Mystery Series (Starring Lacey and Brennan together)

The Color of Rain

Time for Us to Come Home for Christmas

The Wedding Veil (Entire Series)

Open By Christmas

Flower Shop Mystery Series

caravan sonnet

6. Harvest Moon

Hallmark Description: When her family goes bankrupt, privileged city girl Jen Stone travels to the country to try and help a struggling pumpkin farm that her father bought as an investment to get her money back. Not everyone is on board with her changes, least of all Brett, the farm’s handsome manager. By working with what she knows best, she just might be able to turn the farm around, while also falling in love.

Y'all this one is simply so cute. It makes you laugh and it really is just a precious story. It was a Hallmark movie that I felt the trailer for it really didn't do justice for it and am so glad that we took a chance and tried it. It really is just so so cute.

Find it on Amazon HERE!

7. An Uncommon Grace

Hallmark Description: Following her tour of duty, army nurse Grace Conner (Macallan) returns to her grandmother’s (McGillis) farm in Ohio’s Amish country, and answers a neighbor’s call for medical assistance following a mysterious intrusion and shooting at his family’s nearby farm. Soon, Grace, who is not Amish, and Levi Troyer (Faris) develop a deep connection that is more than simply neighborly, and must sort out their forbidden relationship while Grace follows clues that ultimately lead her to the killer. Stars Jes Macallan, Sean Faris and Kelly McGillis.

This movie had a bit of a mystery with it and is a fun Hallmark movie to curl up with this autumn. It is honestly one of my favorites and I loved the plot and the character development. This family friendly mystery is a perfect one to watch on a cool fall evening.

Find it on Amazon HERE!

Other movies I loved with these two actors...

A Veteran's Christmas

So there are just a few of some of my favorite hallmark movies to curl up with this autumn! What about y'all? What are some of your favorite fall Hallmark Movies?

tips for controlling your blood pressure

September 26, 2023

Do you feel as though your blood pressure is a bit out of control? If so then now is the time for you to do something about that. Blood pressure can be high for several reasons, whether it is to do with you not being able to reduce stress, or simply having a bad diet. If you want to do something about your high blood pressure then one thing you can do is follow the tips below.

Lose Weight

Blood pressure will increase as your weight does. If you are overweight then this can lead to you experiencing disrupted breathing when you sleep, which will raise your blood pressure even more. Losing weight is one of the most effective changes you can make if you want to lower your blood pressure. Losing even just a small amount of weight is great if you want to make a difference here. If you carry too much weight around your waistline then this can also increase your chances of experiencing high blood pressure, so be mindful of that.

Workout Regularly

Another thing you need to do is work out regularly. Regular exercise is great if you feel the need to alleviate high blood pressure. Walking, jogging and even cycling are all options here. Strength training can also reduce your blood pressure. If possible, you need to aim to strength-train at least two days a week. Have a chat with your healthcare provider if you need help working on your exercise program.

Eat a Good Diet

Eating a diet that is rich in whole grain, low-fat dairy products or vegetables will work wonders for your health. It can also lower your blood pressure by up to 11mm hg. Examples of good eating plans that can help your cholesterol include the DASH diet. Don’t be afraid to check out the Mediterranean diet either, if you want another option there. You can also get supplements from science.bio, as a lot of them are great for supporting your overall health.

Reduce Salt

Even just a small amount of sodium in your diet can work wonders for your heart health. It can also greatly reduce your blood pressure. If you want to make a change here then one thing you need to do is avoid fast food or food that has a  lot of added salt to them. Ready meals are a prime example here. If you can, try and avoid adding salt to your existing food products as well. If you can do this then you will notice a major dip in your blood pressure and this is great if you feel as though it is something that you struggle with. If you want some help with your blood pressure then make sure that you have a chat with your doctor too, as they can advise you on what steps you can take to try and get yours to a much more manageable level.

Of course, lowering your blood pressure might not be easy, but it is essential to your health. Why not see if you can make a difference today? It could change your life.

fall bucket list for the lake champlain region // new york and vermont

caravan sonnet
Happy first official week of fall y'all! Today I am so excited to share just a few of my favorite and fun fall activities around the Lake Champlain area that should definitely be added to your bucket list if you live in this region or are visiting for the first time!
caravan sonnet
Drive to See Fall Foliage
Starting in mid-September (or later depending on the summer/early fall weather) through October the gorgeous leaves burst into color creating a beautiful view for all to see. Surrounding Lake Champlain are both the Adirondack and Green Mountains so you can see so many vibrant colors on both sides of the Lake.
caravan sonnet
Hiking
Both the Adirondack Mountains and the Green Mountains surround the beautiful Lake Champlain. If you love hiking in the New England area then this area of the United States is a hikers dream. If you are interested in hiking the Adirondacks and want to hike all of the "46 peaks" for the "46ers club" you can find out more about this HERE.

Not ready to hike a "46er peak" but still want to hike in the Adirondacks? One of my favorite mountains is Rattlesnake which offers wonderful views of Long Pond, Lake Champlain, Vermont, and more. You can read about my hike on Rattlesnake Mountain several summers ago by clicking HERE!

If you are interested in finding out more about hiking in the Green Mountains you can join the "Green Mountain Club" and find out more about it HERE.
caravan sonnet
Visit One of the Adorable Towns on the Shores of Lake Champlain
I have shared before about one of my favorite towns, Essex, and all of its adorable charms. Essex is just one town along the lake that offers adorable New England charm, quaint and yummy dining options with beautiful lake side views, a rich and cultural experience, and unique shopping during the fall. You can read more about all of my favorite towns along the New York side of Lake Champlain HERE.
caravan sonnet
Biking
Just like it is for summer, biking is a perfect activity for the fall months! All along Lake Champlain there are tons of different bike paths that you can choose from that will take you around the Lake, or by the Lake (like the beautiful views that the Burlington Vermont Bike Path offers), and some that even "cross the lake" using one of the ferries or bridges.
caravan sonnet
Ride the Cloudsplitter Gondola at Whiteface Mountain
I shared about this adventure we did in the early spring and the views from the top are breathtaking. You can read more about our adventure HERE and the views with the leaves changed would be simply stunning. You can find out more about the Cloudsplitter Gondola at Whiteface Mountain HERE.
caravan sonnet
Adirondack Balloon Festival
The Adirondack Balloon Festival is a yearly festival that happens every September in Glens Falls, NY and in Queensbury, NY.  You can find out more about this event by clicking HERE. There is also a Vermont Balloon Festival which is so fun and is wonderful to check out if you are wanting to be in Vermont.
caravan sonnet
Fall Festivals
There are many Fall festivals that are held in the towns and cities along Lake Champlain!
caravan sonnet
Farmers Markets
There are numerous towns along Lake Champlain that hosts farmers markets each week. Each of these farmers markets offer the best of local products and offer a wonderful opportunity to support the local farms.
caravan sonnet
Take a Weekend Trip
There are numerous weekend trips that you can take surrounding the Lake Champlain area. You could head north into Canada or south to New York City or over to Boston... honestly for driving less than 5 hours you can step into a different world for the weekend all while witnessing the beauty of the fall colors!
caravan sonnet
Heroic Corn Maze, Fort Ticonderoga
If y'all know me at all than you know I love corn mazes. This corn maze in Fort Ticonderoga is also known as the "heroic corn maze" in Fort Ticonderoga is a family friendly activity for people of all ages to enjoy. This six-acre corn maze is designed especially for Fort Ticonderoga providing a variety of opportunities (including historical ones) for people to find in this life size puzzle. The maze is open throughout the season through mid-October and even has days that the maze can be explored at night. Find out more information about this fun fall event by clicking HERE.

Another fun thing I discovered last year was the Moonlight Madness Corn Maze at Hathaway Farms in Vermont! I definitely can't wait to do this this year! You can find out more information HERE.

Applefolkfest at Penfield Museum
Penfield Museum which is located in Crown Point, NY (on the lower part of Lake Champlain) hosts "Applefolkfest" each year which is an excellent fall tradition to be apart of. As the name suggests, the museum is paying homage and celebrating the staple of fall in northern, New York, the apple. You can find out more about this family friendly even by clicking HERE.

Apple Picking
I love fall. I really do. It makes me feel all cozy inside and there is something about going apple picking that makes it seem like the seasons have transitioned. There are numerous places to go apple picking in this area. (The same thing is true for going to pick out a pumpkin!)

There are so many different things to do around Lake Champlain in the Fall and these are just a few of the favorites!! What are your favorites?
