5. Overwhelmingly Grateful
A year yesterday we were in a very different place. Mom was in the ER, heading into the ICU for a stay, and we had no idea that she was fighting anaplasmosis or what the next days, weeks, and months would look like with a cascade of different things.

To be at the spot we are at now... it has just been absolutely beautiful. Numerous times throughout the day I just thank the Lord so much. The little moments were always precious, but they are even more precious now. Thank you for all of your prayers for us last year and as we continue forward. We are so incredibly grateful.

If there is anything that I could specifically pray for you, please feel free to send an email. I would be honored to pray for you!

With Caravan Sonnet turning ten years old I thought it would be fun on Fridays to share some older posts from the blog!

It is overwhelming to think about those first few baby steps of getting back into the classroom. *tears* At the time I knew it would be a slow journey, but to see where I am now... I am truly overwhelmed. Thank you to everyone who has supported me over so many years with so much love!

Confronting the Health Issue of Back Pain

Back pain is basically an epidemic for adults. Worldwide, 619 million people were affected by lower back pain in 2020, and that number is estimated to increase to 843 million cases by 2050. Back pain can be mild and irritating, or it can be more severe and, in some cases, debilitating. When you have back pain, it can make it more difficult to move around but might also cause difficulty in resting at the same time. But it's not always easy to find the cause of back pain or the right treatment. If you're experiencing back pain, searching for the right solution can help you get your life back.

Explore Possible Treatments

The first thing many people want to do is simply find the cause and the right treatment for their back pain. However, this isn't always easy to do. You might be able to treat the pain itself, but you also need to consider what's causing it so you can treat that too. You can explore a range of possible causes and treatments. Some people try out chiropractic medicine to see if spinal adjustments could help them. Others might have an issue that requires surgery. Speaking to medical professionals about your back pain can help you find the right treatment plan.

Strengthen Muscles to Ease Pain

When the cause of back pain isn't easy to find, you can look at how to reduce and manage the pain. One of the most recommended things to do is to strengthen your core muscles to give your back more support. Your lower back experiences a lot of stress, but stronger muscles surrounding your spine will help to provide the support it needs. Stretching is also a good way to help with back pain. A lot of people find that regular walking is really helpful. It strengthens their muscles and helps to stretch out their backs at the same time.

Make Lifestyle Changes

Some changes to your lifestyle and how you live day to day can definitely help you if you're struggling with back pain. It might not be the fast solution that you're looking for, but making some healthy lifestyle changes could have long-term benefits. As well as exercising more, you might want to try adjusting your posture when you're sitting or standing. Changing your sleeping position or making sure you have a supportive mattress can help too, and even making sure you lift things properly can help to reduce back pain.

Address Other Health Issues

Other health issues can also tie in with back pain. You can find that back pain is caused or made worse by certain problems. For example, being overweight can put extra strain on your back. If you're a smoker, it restricts blood flow to the discs that cushion your spine, which might mean these discs deteriorate faster. Addressing health issues like these could be the key to improving your back pain.

Back pain affects a lot of people, but you always hope you won't be one of them. If back pain is causing you problems, don't rely on it maybe going away. Finding the right solution is essential.

10 unique and incredible health benefits of black raspberries

July 27, 2023

caravan sonnet
Happy Thursday friends! Today I am excited to share about the surprising and amazing benefits of black raspberries! If you missed my post yesterday (click HERE) you may have missed the fact that I expressed that I have a little love affair with black raspberries.

As it is seemingly impossible to find them frozen, I take the time during the summer to pick and freeze them for the year and slowly count down to the next summer (my favorite time of year!) by the bag. *smiles*

This is a fruit that is not often talked about and I started wondering and researching about all of the health benefits! I was amazed at the incredible studies that have been done on the power of this little fruit that packs such an important health punch.

First a couple of things to know:
1. Black Raspberries have an incredibly short season of availability. Depending on different factors of rain/heat it is most common for black raspberries to be only available from July 1st- July 21st.
2. Black Raspberries are native to North America.
3. The nickname for black raspberries is "black cap".
4. An historical fact for my history loving heart: The extremely dark pigment in black raspberries has been used as a coloring agent and the USDA stamp on meat was actually made with black raspberry dye for years.

Today I am so excited to share with y'all 10 surprising and Amazing Benefits of Eating black raspberries in no particular order:
caravan sonnet
1. Research Shows Black Raspberries May Slow the Growth of Certain Cancers
Many studies are underway that are showing that black raspberries have an ability to slow the growth of certain cancers. In vitro studies are currently showing that extracts of this berry may slow or reverse the growth of breast, cervical, colon, oral and esophageal cancers. A few studies that are emerging are stating the following:
* Ohio State University studies show a 60-80% reduction in colon tumors in rats who were fed a diet that included black raspberries.
* Ohio State University studies show an 80% reduction in esophageal cancers in mice that were fed a 5-10% diet of black raspberries
* One study gave humans with colorectal cancer 60 grams of black raspberry powder daily for up to 9 weeks. After monitoring the results, it was shown to find that the powder stopped the spread and induced the death of colon cancer cells in those who took the powder for at least 10 days of the 9 week study.

According to this Tampa dentist, black raspberries also have phytochemicals  that can reduce the risk of oral cancer.

2. High in Ellagic Acid
Black raspberries have high Ellagic acid, which is a compound that is known to be a potent anticarcinogen, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial.

3. One of the highest foods in Anthocyanins
Anthocyanins help give foods their deep, dark color and have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and vasoprotective properties. Research has linked the intake of anthocyanins with improved vision, cardiovascular health, memory retention in old age and even a reduced risk of hypertension.

4. Astonishingly High Antioxidant power
Recent testing has confirmed that black raspberries have astonishingly high antioxidant levels. These levels have a an incredible absorption to absorb free radicals which can damage DNA, cause cellular change, and cause premature mental aging. Consuming foods like this help prevent cancer, heart disease, stroke, and possibly even Alzheimer's Disease. When compared to other foods and berries, black raspberries high antioxidant power is one of the highest.

5. High in Fiber
1 small cup of black raspberries serve nearly 29% of the recommended dose of fiber for your body which supports your digestive system, helps promote heart health, and may aid in weight loss!

6. Helps to Lower Inflammation
Black Raspberries are a food that you should consume regularly if you are looking to help your body reduce chronic inflammation. Black Raspberries naturally cause a reduction in inflammation and allow your body's processes to happen as they should.

7. Beneficial for Heart Health
Some studies have shown that properties in black raspberries may also help heart health. In these studies people taking black raspberry powder or extract (versus the group that took a placebo) saw a higher circulating level of endothelial progenitor cells. These cells are various cells that help repair and restore the lining of blood vessels.

8. Helps to Regulate Blood Pressure
Potassium (found in Strawberries) is considered to help not only our hearts, but also can help regulate blood pressure!

9. Helps Maintain a Healthy Blood Pressure
In studies that have been done, those that take dried black raspberry powder often have shown to be beneficial in reducing high blood pressure issues.

10. Helps Maintain Healthy Eyes
Because black raspberries consist of a huge amount of anthocyanins (discussed above) they are a huge help to our eyes. Specifically the benefits include improved night vision, extra circulation through the capillaries of the retina, decreased chances of retinopathy in patients with diabetes, and a proven safeguard against macular degeneration!

Don't Put An Offer Down On A House Without Reading This Guide

July 26, 2023

If the time has come for you to start shopping around for homes then there are many considerations that you should be thinking about. Check out the guide below to find out more information on what you should be looking at when it comes to buying a home.

Hidden Dangers

First, it’s important to check for any hidden dangers that might make your home unsafe or could cause headaches for you further down the road. For instance, if you are buying an older home, then it’s possible that there’s asbestos in the walls. In the past, this was used for insulation purposes. However, today we know that it’s dangerous and has been linked to a few significant health conditions. This is why it’s essential that you do invest in a full inspection service before you even think about buying.

Location, Location

Something else to think about when it comes to buying a home is the location of said property. It is essential you don’t just think about the location at the time of looking at properties. You should be thinking further down the line as places can become significantly worse over time. Make sure you do your research when you are shopping around for houses. If you go and look at properties then it may be worth speaking with the neighbors and gauging their view on the neighborhood. You should also view the areas you are interested in both day and night, it may sound silly but an area could be the nicest during the day then change at night. Be sure to check the crime statistics before you settle on a location for your new property. These can be found online and all you need to do is enter the area or postcode you are wanting to move to.

The location can also mean other issues that you might not expect. For instance, if the home is on a flood plain then it’s definitely worth looking into home drainage tips that will help you avoid your property becoming a flooded mess.

The Right Price

Don’t forget to check the price of the home that’s being sold. You don’t want to end up in a situation where the price is more than the house is actually worth. The easiest way to avoid this is to get a few different valuations of the home. You might also want to research how much similar homes are selling for in your area. That way you can decide whether the home you want is being marketed at a fair price.

Other Considerations

There are of course other considerations that are worth thinking about before you decide to put an offer down on the home of your dreams. For instance, you need to think about your neighbors. After all, these are the people who you are going to be living next to, potentially for years. If you don’t get on with them, then it’s going to be a nightmare for you.

We hope this helps you understand some of the key points that you definitely need to think about before putting that final offer down on a house.

what's up wednesday (july 2023 edition)

caravan sonnet
Happy Wednesday friends! I am excited to join in on the What's Up Wednesday posts again this month!

If you are like me then I truly am literally in shock that it is the end of July. I do not believe that I have had a summer go by so quickly since I was a kid. It has just been flying. I am treasuring every single moment and looking forward to a couple of more months at the cabin and hope that they go by slowly.

What We're Eating this Week...
caravan sonnet
Black raspberries. And more Black Raspberries.

While I work hard to get lots and lots of different fruits and veggies into me, it not a secret to those who know me how much I love fresh black raspberries. This berry is simply incredible and it is so so good. I purchase extra to freeze during the winter and slowly portion out the amount throughout the whole year to get me to the next fresh ones. They are delicious!

What I'm Reminiscing About...
caravan sonnet
All the back to school prepping things as a teacher and room F112.

As I am working on final edits and pages for my upcoming book, The Opportunity Cost of the Sun (releasing December 1st!!), I have been remembering the absolute precious times in that classroom above. And during this time of year, not going back into the classroom, my heart honestly grieves where I long to be. It is not the season for that right now, but my heart truly grieves that in many ways.

Interested in keeping up to date with the book release? You can read more HERE and sign up for updates (on the book and other fun projects) by following along by signing up with your email HERE!

What I'm Loving...
caravan sonnet
Any dry evening at camp. *smiles* I am somewhat joking, but with all of the rain we have had we have treasured even more any evening we have had the opportunity to sit out on our favorite place and look out at the lake.

This is also a place that I find myself spending hours upon hours in prayer. For years I was too sick to leave this porch and now I find myself in a different season... facing huge decisions, looking for huge answers to prayers and miracles and I am grateful to be at this place that is surrounded by so much beauty to have a place of peace and rest to pray and process.

What I've Been Up To...
caravan sonnet

On Monday I shared one of the newest additions to the shop are these personal finance posters which make perfect classroom decor or decor for homeschool mamas! You can read all about them HERE!

Before I leave this topic... I do want to say that I remain speechless at how far I have truly come in this healing process. For the last "What's Up Wednesday" post I wrote (back in 2018!!) I shared that I was studying and studying for all of the teacher certification tests. It is overwhelming to think about those first few baby steps of getting back into the classroom. *tears* At the time I knew it would be a slow journey, but to see where I am now... I am truly overwhelmed. Thank you to everyone who has supported me over so many years with so much love!

What I'm Dreading...
Honestly absolutely nothing. This summer has been a true answer to so many different prayer requests for the last 15 years. Last summer we were dreading my mom's complicated surgery and to see where she is at this year... we honestly just are grateful for each and every moment.
caravan sonnet
What I'm Working on...
In addition to the shops and editing, I am working on cleaning out and truly embracing more minimalism in so many different areas of life. It is a long process, but one that I have been truly working on recently and a focus this summer.

What I'm Excited About...
caravan sonnet
Still enjoying this summer.
Thankful to have still a couple of months at the cabin.
Treasuring every single moment.

What I'm Watching/Reading...
caravan sonnet
I have been reading a ton of books here at the cabin and honestly... I am working my way through this one again. I have said this almost at nauseum but there has not been a book that has impacted my faith more over the last 5 years then this book. I need to do an entire blog post on why, but for now, my tender heart will just say that if you are living in a season of broken dreams and spending lots of time weeping... this book is for you. You can find it HERE.

What I'm Listening To...
caravan sonnet
I shared this last month, but on my morning walks I have been listening to different sermons and a recent one I have listened to again and again from Joel Osteen was on Supernatural Provision. If you are looking for an encouraging and uplifting message during a difficult season, this message from Joel Osteen has been incredibly encouraging and I have listened to it on repeat this week!  You can find it HERE!

What I'm Doing This Weekend...
We are SO excited to hopefully be putting in our little boat!! Y'all. ALL the emotions. Growing up I spent every single day on the water while we were at the cabin. Grief and loss ... they reach into every single area of life and this has been a major change for us. We are so grateful for all of the help to help make this possible. I am definitely going to keep y'all updated!

What I'm Looking Forward to Next Month...
caravan sonnet
Believing that this next month will see tons of answers to big prayers that we have been praying, crying out to the Lord for in miraculous ways!

What Amazon Purchase I loved this Month...
caravan sonnet
