Take Better Care of Your Home Appliances with This Advice

June 28, 2021

Your home appliances make life a lot easier. They do many of these things you could spend hours doing if you didn't have them. Although they save you time, they also cost you money. You don't want to have to replace them too often, which means that you want them to last as long as possible. To extend the lifespan of your home appliances, you need to take good care of them. While you might think that you're already doing that, there could be a few things that you're missing. Take a look at this advice to take better care of your home appliances.

Read the Instructions

When your appliances arrived, did you read the manual? Many people don't bother, choosing to figure out how to use their new appliances as they go along. You can certainly pick up the basics without glancing at the instructions, but it could have consequences. Reading the manual gives you the information that you need to clean, care for and maintain your appliance. It will tell you how to use it efficiently and safely, how to troubleshoot common problems, and how to prevent problems too. If you've lost the manual, you can probably find a copy online.

Treat Your Hard Water

If your home uses well water or you live in an area with hard water, it could cause problems for your appliances. Your dishwasher or washing machine can deteriorate if hard water is going through it. To solve this issue, you can treat your water with water softeners. Not only is this good for your appliances, but it's also better for your skin and hair. By softening your water, you remove the hard-water minerals that can shorten the lifespan of your appliances. Installing a water softener system could save you a lot of money long-term by protecting your appliances.

Clean Regularly

Keeping your appliances clean is an important part of taking good care of them. If you don't clean them regularly, they could deteriorate and there might be more strain on them. Cleaning your appliances both inside and out will protect them and help them to last longer. For example, cleaning around a door will help to keep the seal clean so it works for longer. If there are filters to change, such as in your tumble dryer or dishwasher, make sure you change or clean them regularly too.

Keep Use to a Minimum

Your appliances are very handy and make life a lot easier for you. However, the more you use them, the shorter their lifespan is going to be. Changing the way that you use your appliances can help them to last longer. Choose the shortest cycle on your dishwasher or washing machine and only turn it on when it's full (but avoid overloading it). Turn your oven on just before you need it to be heated and turn it off as soon as you've finished cooking.

Protect your home appliances by taking good care of them. You can get more use out of them if you treat them well.

The Keys to a Successful Road Trip

Any form of travel can be fun and exciting, but there’s just something about a road trip that sets it apart from all the other options. If it’s just you, your nearest and dearest, and the open road, then what could be better? We’re struggling to think of a more enjoyable way to spend a week or two! If it’s been some time since you took a road trip, then take a read of the tips that we’ve outlined below. That’ll ensure that your trip is nothing but a rousing success!

Keep Things Loose

With most types of trips, you’ll want to have a pretty tight schedule. You kind of need to when there are flights involved, since the plane will take off with or without you! But when you’re in a car, you can keep things a little more relaxed. There’s no need to plan everything -- part of the fun is not knowing what you’re going to be doing, after all. Rather than having a precise route from and to your front door, look at having, instead, just a vague route to follow. You’ll find that your trip is more enjoyable when you can go in whatever direction is calling your name.

Safe and Reliable Vehicles

Your trip could well be rudely interrupted if your vehicle isn’t up to scratch. Having a reliable vehicle is important at all times, but it’s even more critical when you’re on a long road trip! If you know that your current car isn’t reliable, then look at upgrading to a car that is, such as the Honda Civic. If you don’t want to upgrade your vehicle, then at the very least, make sure that your car is being seen to by a mechanic to ensure that everything is working just as it should.

Keep the Costs Down

You’ll run into trouble if the costs begin to spiral out of control. You can get around this by planning ahead and doing what you can to limit the expenses. Camping, preparing your own meals, and learning how to drive to optimize MPG (miles per gallon) can all help. Perhaps the most effective way to keep costs down is to limit the time you spend on the road. There can be a big difference in costs between 7 days and ten days, for instance.

Avoid Overpacking

There’s always a temptation to pack as much stuff as possible when you’re on a road trip. But it’s worthwhile resisting that temptation! If you pack too much, then for starters, you’ll end up spending more than you’d like on gas (heavy cars = more gas), and you’ll also be less comfortable when you’re driving. Keep things light!

A Sense of Adventure

Finally, remember to take a sense of adventure with you! You’ll always come up against challenges when you’re on the road. A sense of adventure will help you to roll with the punches and make the best of it, no matter what situation you find yourself in. Have fun!

Whittier // Alaska

Caravan Sonnet Blog
Happy Monday friends! I hope that y'all had a lovely weekend! Today I am excited to continue recap my Alaskan Road Trip Adventures from 2019. As I have shared, I wanted to do this because I hope that it encourages you to consider taking a road trip of your own this summer to this beautiful part of the world!

Today I am excited to share more with y'all more about our recent trip to Alaska, specifically talking about the adorable town of Whittier, Alaska!
Caravan Sonnet Blog
As I shared before, our trip started early Saturday morning and after a yummy breakfast at Snow City Cafe (a favorite restaurant I discovered last year!), we headed south to the Kenai Peninsula to spend time at several different locations, including Beluga Point (which I shared about HERE if you missed it!) on the beautiful and scenic Seward Highway. If you read about the Alaskan road trip that I did last year than you may have read about the beautiful Seward Highway, but if you missed the post you can find and read it HERE! From Anchorage, Whittier is only 60 miles away and it will take approximately and hour and a 1/2 to get to, which includes a drive through the Whittier (Anton Anderson Memorial) Tunnel. I shared about the tunnel and all the information you need to know if you are driving to Whittier HERE so be sure to check that post out!

We arrived in Whittier in time for lunch and ate at the Inn at Whittier (where we had made reservations). It was such a yummy and delicious lunch and honestly one of my favorite meals of the entire trip! Both Sue and I picked the Salmon Burger which was a Salmon Fillet that was so incredibly fresh -it just melted in your mouth! Emily chose a pasta and said it was equally as yummy. For those who are gluten free like myself, they didn't have a gluten free menu but were very gluten free friendly and it made it easy and safe to eat there so I definitely recommend it!

While we were waiting for our food to come out Sue and I wandered out to the viewing deck at the restaurant. The views were stunning and I was immediately charmed by the town of Whittier.

It was so beautiful and the fishing boats were so fascinating to watch!

Whittier was truly a beautiful place to start our trip. It is a port stop on a lot of Alaskan cruises but I wouldn't classify it as necessarily a "touristy" place that you might think of with port stops. To me this hit me as a quaint area of Alaska that was unique and beautiful to see and I was glad that I had included it in the itinerary for this year. It is definitely worth a visit!

We stayed outside until Emily motioned us in that our meals were ready and we had the most delightful lunch before heading out to explore Whittier!

After lunch we walked from the Inn at Whittier down to the docks and to visit the first section of the town.

The sun came out as we started walking around and the colors of the water against the mountains and the sky were absolutely beautiful! The boats seemed to have even more vibrant colors against those blue-green waters of Whittier!

As we were walking around we saw this memorial to the earthquake that happened in Whittier in 1964. Also known as the "Good Friday Earthquake", Whittier suffered more than $10 million dollars in damages and sadly lost 13 people when a tsunami wave (43 feet high) hit Whittier.

At this point in 2019, this earthquake still remains the largest earthquake in the United States and even caused tsunamis along the Western Coast of the United States.

I feel that I should insert this in the middle of this post as a fair warning that I think I have a little crush on Otters after this trip. *smiles* They seriously are so cute!

Isn't that clock so adorable?

After we walked around the first part of Whittier by the Inn, we drove and parked down at the second area that had a few shops and food places. You could easily walk to this area too if you wanted to, but due to time constraints with catching the tunnel time to return (and let's be honest- jet lag!) we drove over. *smiles*

We enjoyed walking around the shops, purchasing a few souvenirs and seeing the absolute beauty of this area of Alaska. We spent approximately 4 hours in Whittier and I would say that this was a good amount of time to spend if you are planning a similar road trip. I thought it was a great "first day" place to visit also as we were all tired from the long trip from the east coast and Whittier was very relaxed and chill. The people were really friendly and welcoming and really were so interesting to talk to in the different shops and places we visited. It is definitely worth the trip over and if you are going to have it as a stop on your cruise you will definitely enjoy it!

Thank you for stopping by and reading about our time in Whittier today! I am so excited to share more with y'all as it was truly an incredible trip with amazing and wonderful people! Let me know if y'all have any questions about Whittier! I hope y'all have a great start to the week friends!
