summer things to do on lake champlain

June 4, 2024

Caravan Sonnet Blog
Several weeks ago I received a phone call from a friend who was going to be visiting the Lake Champlain area with her family for several days this summer and was interested in knowing my suggestions for things to do on the lake. I started thinking and then listed thing after thing incredibly quickly until we were both laughing and she said, "just write a blog post". Laughingly I agreed and so today I thought I would share some of my favorite activities to do in this area. Enjoy y'all!

Water Activities
Caravan Sonnet Blog
It probably goes without saying that the water activities to do on the lake are endless. From boating to tubing to sailing to kayaking to skiing, the lake is a water lovers dream. I shared a couple of years ago about a typical day on the lake for us - especially as I was growing up. We spent hours upon hours from dawn till dusk skiing, tubing, and boating. If you love playing on the water than you will find tons of different activities to do.

Visit the Beach
There are so many beautiful spots along Lake Champlain and with over 50 public beaches there are gorgeous areas for families and friends to gather for a day at the Beach or even have a picnic. Some of you may remember my post on the New York Marshland and Valcour Island from years ago. That New York Marshland is a perfect example of how gorgeous these beaches are!

Walk Around One of the Adorable Towns on the Shores of Lake Champlain

Caravan Sonnet Blog
I love all of the cute towns along Lake Champlain, including one of my favorites, Essex, and all of its adorable charms. A couple of years ago I shared some of my favorite towns to visit along the New York side of Lake Champlain, including Fort Ticonderoga, Westport, Essex, Crown Point, and Valcour. These, and many other towns along the lake offer adorable New England charm, quaint and yummy dining options with beautiful lake side views, a rich and cultural experience, and unique shopping.

Biking
All along Lake Champlain there are tons of different bike paths that you can choose from that will take you around the Lake, or by the Lake (like the beautiful views that the Burlington Vermont Bike Path offers), and some that even "cross the lake" using one of the ferries or bridges.

National Museums and Landmarks
Throughout the Lake Champlain area there are tons of National Landmarks due to the incredible American History that was fought in this area and also lots of National Museums for those who are interested in seeing those during their visits.

Diving
Caravan Sonnet Blog
Many people think of diving as something solely found in the more tropical parts of the world but may be surprised to find out that Lake Champlain offers fantastic opportunities for those who love diving. There are nine known shipwrecks and most of them have been very well preserved due to the cold-water environment. What divers will also be pleased to discover is that beyond some of the boats that are from the 1800s, there is actual parts of the Horse Ferry (which was featured in National Geographic) which is the only known wreck of a horse-powered ferry in the United States!

Finally, beyond the shipwrecks that are found in Lake Champlain divers will be able to experience vertical cliffs that are extremely dramatic and often only found in the Bahamas. Interested in finding out more? Click HERE to go to the Waterfront Diving Center website in Burlington, Vermont!

Fishing
Fishing competitions, including the Bass Competition are huge parts of the community here on Lake Champlain. But whether you just enjoy casting your net out in a leisurely manner (with someone else who will do the worms for you *smiles*) or you are one who likes to fish for competition, Lake Champlain offers several different options to explore.

Sailing
Caravan Sonnet Blog
I admit that sailing when I was a kid was not one of my favorite activities. Those of you who grew up with me and are reading this are laughing because it was actually quite comical how many different circumstances happened when we would sail. I won't bore you here, but suffice it to say that it didn't become one of my favorite activities until I grew older. My mama loves to sail and has often joked that she is praying that I will marry a man who loves to sail too. She loves to be up at the crack of dawn, sailing in her baby sunfish, and would spend hours upon hours in our sailboat if she had the opportunity. As the years have passed I, as I have mentioned, have honestly grown to love it. While financially we have not had our "bigger" sailboat in in years it is still one of my favorite activities to recommend to people.

If you don't own a sailboat or don't know how to sail you can easily learn how to at the Lake at the Community Sailing Center in Burlington. You can find out more on their website by clicking HERE.

Burlington, Vermont Jazz Festival
Every year Burlington hosts a Jazz festival that is so much fun. If you enjoy live music (especially jazz music) then you are in for a treat and I definitely recommend planning your trip around this event! You can find out all of the details for the upcoming year on their website by clicking HERE.

Hiking
Caravan Sonnet Blog
Both the Adirondack Mountains and the Green Mountains surround the beautiful Lake Champlain. If you love hiking then this area of the United States is a hikers dream. If you are interested in hiking the Adirondacks and want to hike all of the "46 peaks" for the "46ers club" you can find out more about this HERE. If you are interested in finding out more about hiking in the Green Mountains you can join the "Green Mountain Club" and find out more about it HERE.

Looking for waterfalls in the Adirondack/ Lake Champlain Area? Consider joining in on the #adk50falls challenge (you can read about the falls I have visited HERE!)

Island Hop
There are many islands scattered through Lake Champlain. While some are privately owned or protected by the state there are several islands that you can go to by boat for a picnic or to camp out on. Don't have a boat? Consider visiting Burton Island which is a Vermont State Park that can be accessed (for free) by ferry!

There are so many different things to do on Lake Champlain during the summer! What are your favorites?

how to have a health-boosting home

June 3, 2024

It’s simultaneously easy and difficult to be healthy these days. On the one hand, we have more information than ever about what we all need to be fit and healthy. On the other hand, the modern lifestyle pushes many of us to be more sedentary than we’d like to be, which has a knock-on effect on our wellness.

As such, it’s recommended to do whatever you can to make a healthy life as easy as possible to obtain. One effective method is to ensure that your home works for, rather than against, your health. Let’s take a look at some effective ways to do just that.

Create a Yoga Room

It can be difficult to leave the home and head outdoors to do healthy activities at the best of times, but it’s even more challenging during the frigid winter months. During those periods, you’ll be much more likely to spend evening after evening on the couch, watching television. While it’s important to rest, it’s equally as important to move your body! One way to do this from the comfort of your own home is to create a yoga room. With these, you’ll have a dedicated space where you do nothing but invest in your well-being. The room can also be used to lift weights and meditate.

Add a Sauna

If you’ve ever been in a sauna, then you’ll know just how enjoyable they can be. But the benefits of saunas extend beyond simply making your body feel nice and cozy; they can also do wonders for your health. Studies have shown that saunas can help boost cardiovascular health, reduce inflammation, and reduce stress. In other words: they can be extremely good for you. To get all these benefits — and to just have an awesome place to spend chilly evenings — look at getting in touch with a sauna installation company. Combine time in your sauna with yoga, and we’re confident that you’ll feel on top of the world.

Sleep-Friendly Bedroom

Having a sauna can also help prepare your body for sleep. But it can’t do all of the work. To ensure you can consistently get a great night’s sleep, look at investing in your bedroom to ensure that it’s fully sleep-friendly. That means creating a minimalist space, blocking out any external noise and light, and having a comfortable bed. Your body does most of its repair work when you’re asleep, so make sure you’re giving it the time it needs to do its thing!

Healthy Food and Drink

Finally, you can make it easier to live a healthy lifestyle by investing in the right kinds of foods for your home. If you have healthy ingredients, then there’ll be less need to order unhealthy meals. Plus, you may also consider investing in a quality water filter. That won’t only make your water cleaner and healthier, but it’ll also make it more likely that you drink water. After all, if you like the taste of your water, then there’ll be no reason to drink bad-for-you drinks.

elevating family gatherings: a guide to hosting exceptional events in your private residence

May 31, 2024

caravan sonnet

When was the last time that you were able to pull off a highly successful family gathering? These events
are excellent opportunities to bond with your loved ones and often represent one of the few instances when individuals
who lead otherwise hectic lives can catch up with one another. However, hosting one of these events
can represent daunting task (to say the least). There are countless variables to address, and it is often
challenging to handle the finer points.
Let us examine some of the ways in which this burden can be eased so that nothing is left to chance.
The Power of Professional Support
The simple fact of the matter is that the logistics associated with a family gathering can quickly
overwhelm those with a limited amount of time or resources. This is why leveraging the talents
of firms such as Cora Partners private household recruitment agency could represent the most logical solution. Not only can these domestic services modify their
approaches around the event in question, but it is possible to hire a wide array of specialists,
including (but not necessarily limited to):
  • Chauffeurs

  • Butlers

  • Private chefs

  • Housekeepers

  • Gardeners

  • Nannies

These trained professionals can help to bring any family celebration to life thanks to their attention to
detail alongside an unwavering commitment to delivering quality services.

Tips for Planning

Your household staff are well connected, with a wealth of experts at their fingertips! The devil is in the detail when it comes to hosting and your guests will appreciate the fine touches. Here are some suggestions for pointers you can offer to your coordinators:

  • Mood & Lighting: Lighting specialists can help create the perfect ambience in your space
Flowers & Decorations: Professional florists create spectacular arrangements to perfectly enhance your space
Cocktails & Drinks: Mixologists can create custom cocktails to delight your guests.
Consider hiring a champagne bar and staff for those who are in the mood for bubbles
Entertainers & Child Spaces: If you have children at the party, nannies and children’s
entertainers are essential for keeping little people busy!
Photographers & Videographers: Capture memories to last a life-time

Advanced Preparation

One of the most common reasons why an event fails to meet the mark involves nothing more than a
lack of preparation. Whether this is due to poor time management, or the belief that certain tasks
can be put off until the last minute, no one wishes to find themselves dealing with such a scenario.
This is why logistics play such an important role.

For example, professional services such as lighting installation, and garden maintenance might not be
able to be procured on short notice. It is therefore much better to schedule these tasks well ahead of
the event itself. The same holds true when discussing how to choose a professional caterer and selecting the most appropriate musical entertainment.

A Touch of Accountability

Another potent recommendation involves determining the roles of different coordinators.
The ability to successfully delegate responsibilities will ensure that everyone is aware of his or her duties well ahead of the event itself.
This is also an excellent way to leverage specific talents.

For instance, one individual could be placed in charge of invitations while another may be assigned
the role of storing coats and personal items once the guests have arrived.

Memories to Last a Lifetime

Family gatherings do not often occur as frequently as we would like.
This is why planning for all eventualities is critical. From hiring experienced domestic staffing
services to addressing the finer details with an air of foresight, there is little doubt that your next
celebration will leave a lasting impression.

five tender years

caravan sonnet
5 years later of your home going to Heaven yesterday and I have tears of gratitude at the love, laughter, and faith that you bestowed so amazingly on me as a daughter.
caravan sonnet
11 years ago when these pictures were taken we were looking at prognosis after prognosis of no hope. But on this “walk” (if you could call it that because I was to sick and weak to walk and had to be basically carried by my dad) my precious daddy spoke words of truth and life and love over me as he had always done for my entire life. He believed the impossible (even when the “best doctors in the world” said differently) and believed in a future I was to sick to even comprehend… every single day I am grateful for the honor of being known as “Paul’s daughter”.

I miss you so so much daddy and can hear you cheering me on each and every day to love Jesus above anything else….

a guide to feeding essentials for parents traveling with a newborn

May 29, 2024

The nine months of pregnancy can take a mental and physical toll on both parents. The months just after the delivery are tougher. You both have to attend to an endless list of chores and doctor appointments, with no breathing space. Caring for a child is a thankless job that can get overwhelming in virtually no time.

Traveling for a vacation, after the first two months of the baby, can be cathartic. It can be a brand new way for the two of you to reconnect. However, traveling with an infant might seem scary. Agreed, that long-haul flights can be an issue with an infant on board. However, the scenario can change drastically post you reach your hotel.

Moreover, there's magic in sharing that sense of excitement and wonder as a family. And, truth be told, traveling together, as a unit, will only get more difficult as your child starts to grow.

Take this opportunity and go for that long-awaited vacation. This blog post will take you through the absolute essentials that you need to pack for your baby’s hunger requirements.

Baby Formula

You may be familiar with the "feed me" cry, which is typically rhythmic, repetitive, and has a short, low-pitched tone. According to experts, a baby's cries of hunger may also include a “neh” sound. This sound occurs when a baby's tongue instinctively hits the roof of the mouth as they search for milk.

Now, breast milk is by far the healthiest source of food a mother can offer. However, if this is an issue, say, while traveling on a flight or in a public place, many parents resort to infant milk formulas to satiate their baby’ hunger.

However, you need to be very careful while choosing the baby food formula. Many varieties of Enfamil, an instant baby food powder, have been linked to a fatal condition in preterms, called Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). According to TorHoerman Law, this disease can cause perforations in the intestinal walls of the newborn, exposing it to life-threatening infections.

In addition, NEC presents a substantial risk of mortality, with rates varying between 10% to 50%. In cases where there are severe perforations and sepsis, the fatality rate can reach as high as 100%.

Many grieving parents have taken the legal course, where the Enfamil lawsuit alleges that the manufacturers of these baby formulas underplayed the serious risks deliberately. Opt for healthy options, that take care of all the allergies your baby is susceptible to.

Probiotics offer an excellent alternative. Moreover, if your breast milk production is limited, fortification with essential nutrients can significantly enhance its protective qualities.

Feeding Bottles and Nipples

Feeding bottles can come in very handy to feed your infant at regular intervals. Take into account the size and style of bottles that you think are the most suitable for your baby. Does it prefer wide-neck or does it enjoy siping from anti-colic bottles?

Moreover, it is imperative that you also carry multiple options for nipples. Each can work as an alternative, in case the nipple being used is torn or lost.

You never know how dusty or humid your next destination will be. And, so, don't forget to pack a compact bottle brush for easy cleaning on the go. You should try and go for brushes that have handles offering excellent airflow. A compact and dry brush can be easily stored in a diaper bag!

Sterilizing Equipment

In the first few months, your child’s immune system will be very weak and in danger of contracting infections. Practicing good hygiene for your newborn should be non-negotiable.

While on the go, boiling water or a clean kitchen might be out of grasp. In such cases, sterilizing devices like portable steam sterilizers or UV sterilizers might come in handy.

These handy appliances ensure that bottles, nipples, pacifiers, and other feeding supplies are thoroughly sanitized. However, such a sterilizer might not be a fit in your suitcases or handbags.

In such scenarios, sanitizing wipes can be a handy substitute. You can use these wipes to clean toys, playing surfaces, and feeding equipment.

Portable Bottle Warmer or Insulated Bottle Bag

There is a habit that your infant is used to, back home. With all the amenities available in your kitchen, you feed your baby the best possible thing in the best possible way. This also includes the temperature at which you serve milk or water to your child.

However, this luxury might not be attainable while you are moving bases between various destinations. In such scenarios, a portable bottle warmer can allow you to quickly and easily heat breast milk or formula.

There are several varieties of portable warmers available, including ones that run on batteries, automobile adapters, or insulated containers with heat packs. Some models also include temperature control and automated shut-off for enhanced safety.

Another great option for keeping pre-made bottles cold for several hours is an insulated bottle bag. Such bags ensure that your child has fresh juices and/or milk. If planning to invest in these novel alternatives, go for bags with an easy-to-clean fabric composition, many insulated sections, and a leak-proof liner.

To conclude, a properly fed child is a happy child. With your child having no means to communicate their hunger, it is upon you, as parents, to be on your toes.

Your infant does not know how to compromise. You will have to arrange for what is needed by hook or by crook. Following the aforementioned ideas can help you mitigate this risk to a great extent.
