When guests are imminent, we become the most motivated, detail-oriented, obsessive cleaning machines known to man! People are coming over to spend time in your home, and you don’t want them to see a single speck or dust or cushion out of place!
However, there’s a lot of stress in this situation, and none of it is good for you. Guests do appreciate clean homes, but there’s no need to tornado your way through your home with a spray in hand!
Instead, focus on these simple tasks to save yourself time, pressure, and cleaning materials.
The Bathroom!
A.k.a., the most important room to clean and organize when guests are coming over. Bathrooms need cleaning on a regular basis to begin with, but if you’ve got someone staying overnight or for a few days, they need a sparkling basin and toilet bowl to make use of.
Do a thorough job of disinfecting the bathroom plumbing. Whatever cleaner you like to use, let it sit overnight and only then scrub and rinse or flush it in the morning.
Make sure the bathroom mats have been laundered as well, and give the tiles (both on the floor and walls) the once over with a mop or wipe.
Cobwebs and Critters
If you’ve got guests coming over to stay, look up and down. Cast a fine eye over the ceiling and the wall corners, and get as low as possible around the edges of the floor.
You’re looking for cobwebs (which you may need to spotlight in order to see), and other signs that critters are in the house. Because if there’s one thing that unsettles a person when they walk into a house, it’s signs of creepy crawlies!
And hopefully cobwebs are the only thing you have to deal with here! But it’s not a guarantee.
Check for marks that could be pest dirt and don’t let any holes in skirting boards go unaddressed. Clean them out and block them up for now, then call out Aptive pest control to check if anything is living under the surface once your guests are gone.
Pillows, Blankets, and Beds
When guests are staying, the guest bed is the star of the show. It needs to be clean, comfortable, and look like the kind of place they could get a good night’s sleep.
So of course, you’re going to need to put fresh sheets and covers on the bed, but you may want to throw the pillows and the duvet or comforter in the wash as well.
This way you can be sure there’s no lingering dust or hair on these pieces, especially if you own cats that lay on everything!
When guests are coming to stay, some cleaning tasks are more important than others. Make sure your to-do list has these things at the top. And try to remember that if you’re already stressed about cleaning up your home, you only have to focus on the truly important areas!
