These kiddos above{aka my parents} are celebrating their 48th wedding anniversary today. In today's society that would be classified as amazing, but to this single gal it is not only amazing, it is inspirational, entirely possible, and beautiful to have witnessed such an amazing love story growing up. In honor of their anniversary four years ago I shared a post entitled "44 tips to have a happy marriage for 44 years" that has remained one of my most popular posts. Today, in honor of their anniversary I wanted to re-share these 44 tips with you about having a marriage that will not only go the distance, but will be a beautiful story that I have learned from them. |
1. Have a marriage centered on Jesus.
2. Laugh. A lot.
3. Realize what is important and let everything else go.
4. If your marriage is in trouble seek help.
5. Go on dates - at least once a week. (Don't have money for a date? My parents don't either and are constantly being creative with what to do. Look for free events in your area (i.e.- events at a local college, high school, church, etc.), pack a picnic lunch or dinner, go for a walk in a new park that you have not explored, etc.)
6. Be creative.
7. Be intentional.
9. Fight fairly (stick to the subject at hand).
11. Put the other person first.
12. Always remember that life is found in the little moments.
13. Never give your spouse the chance to wonder if you are cheating.
14. Do not ever let pornography become a substance in your house.
15. Never let children divide you and never speak ill of your spouse to your children.
16. Never let the "D" word (divorce) be uttered. The minute that you allow that you start down a road that you do not want to go on.
17. Pray together.
18. Go to church together.
19. Have Godly friends who you can encourage you along the way.
20. Recognize that life (and marriage is hard).
21. Respect him ladies.
22. Love her completely gentleman.
23. Celebrate the big moments.
24. Rejoice with each others successes.
25. Support each other.
26. Understand his job.
27. Love her hearts passions.
28. Understand security is very important for a woman.
29. Take time to talk everyday. (Maybe this means shutting off the TV or turning off the internet - do whatever needs to be done to talk everyday!)
30. If you watch TV, watch TV you both enjoy.
31. Dance in the house
32. Turn off the phone, internet, blackberry, ipad, computer, etc..
33. Enjoy each others presence.
34. Kiss often.
35. Never hang up the phone or leave without saying "I love you".
36. Live life knowing how short it is.
37. Realize that after you have kids you will still be a couple so don't wait eighteen years to keep falling more in love.
38. Never stop flirting.
39. Hold hands whenever possible.
40. Cook for her, clean up for her, do the wash, etc.- Find something she hates to do and do it for her often without being asked.
41. Ladies, don't nag.
42. Find out something he loves to do and encourage it to the fullest.
43. Cry together, not with your friends, or brushing it off. Face life together.
44. Remember that life is fleeting and in the end the only thing that matters is love.

Happy Saturday friends! Today I am so excited to share with you a cute addition to the shop! This adorable hello 2018 altered planner/calendar is now available for purchase! (You can find it HERE!)
Ever since I was a young girl, I have always had an obsession with journaling and making things that I own pretty. I love to fill my planners with colorful, unique, whimsical, and pretty ribbons, sweet paraphernalia, and writing that speaks to my heart and that encourages me.
This hello 2018 altered planner/calendar starts in August 2017 and goes through December 2018.
At the beginning of this small agenda there is a 2-page spread for each month and then there are several pages for each week of the month.
This planner is the perfect size and also weight- it will easily fit into your purse so that you can carry it with you where ever you go. If you are a college student looking for a planner this is the perfect size as it will give you a unique product for school without being to heavy.
Over the years I have shared a couple of my personal altered planners here on the blog (you can see my altered planner from 2015 HERE and my altered planner for 2016 HERE) and last year I started adding altered planners to the shop. If you are interested in a custom altered planner you can order one HERE. I also shared a couple of weeks ago on the blog about a pineapple altered calendar that is available in the shop.
This planner turned out so sweet y'all and I loved the combination of the greens, ivory tones, peaches, and pinks. In my opinion it gives a classy and feminine look that is timeless.
If you are interested in purchasing this hello 2018 planner you can find it HERE. If you are interested in looking at other altered calendars that are available in the shop you can find them in the altered planner/calendar section HERE!
Happy Saturday friends! I hope that you have a wonderful day with friends and family!!
The show lasts 18 minutes and features beautiful fireworks, lights, and lasers and projections more than any other fireworks show in the history of the Magic Kingdom park.
Throughout the 18 minutes viewers witness lots of transformations of the Cinderella Castle as a stirring score featuring contemporary versions of the most popular Disney songs. Y'all it was wonderful. I can't recommend the show enough. You will definitely love this beautiful ending to your day in the parks.
"All those days watching from the windows
All those years outside looking in
All that time never even knowing
Just how blind I've been
Now I'm here blinking in the starlight
Now I'm here suddenly I see
Standing here it's all so clear
I'm where I'm meant to be
And at last I see the light
And it's like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything looks different
Now that I see you
All those days chasing down a daydream
All those years living in a blur
All that time never truly seeing
Things, the way they were
Now he's here shining in the starlight
Now he's here suddenly I know
If he's here it's crystal clear
I'm where I'm meant to go."
The show was the perfect way to conclude what had been an absolutely perfect day at the Disney Parks. The day started bright and early and we spent the morning at Epcot and a few moments at Magic Kingdom before heading over to Animal Kingdom for the afternoon. The evening and the Happily Ever After Fireworks Show at the Magic Kingdom was the absolute most wonderful way to end what had been a day of perfection.
I want to say a HUGE thank you to Disney for making this trip possible. You truly gave a day of perfection and magic and inspiration. I can't wait to go back to Disney again. Thank you again so very much. If you are interested in reading more about the trip you can click on one of the links below:

Like many people with wanderlust, my heart is often drawn to the roads that are less traveled, to the spaces that speak of being wild and free, and to an almost untamed frontier that allows for its community to create a rich and diverse history. For more than a decade, since a grad school friends parents moved to Alaska, I have dreamt of visiting the land that seems rich in a myriad of adventurous opportunities, steep in historical culture, and would provide unforgettable scenery. And several years later, when my grad school roommate and dear friend spent a couple of years living in Alaska I found myself drawn to this place in America that spans the centuries as wild and free as any place that the United States has to offer.
The reasons to dream about planning a visit are as numerous as the sky appears wide in Alaska. From the highways that could provide a dream road trip vacation to the unique adventures no matter what time of year you visit, to the countless fjords, waterfalls, and glaciers, Alaska is a place that you should dream to visit. It seems that everyone has written some article or post about the top reasons to go and honestly... I believe for very good reasons.
Since the US government purchased the land of Alaska for 7.2 million dollars (which roughly works out to be less than 2 cents an acre) in 1867, the immense natural beauty that spans the rivers and mountains alike has called people to "the last frontier".
It is a land that has attracted those from a wide variety of backgrounds and history. From those who have familial connections to those wanting to escape the typical "rat race" life seen in other sections of the world. It comprises a long list of wanderers and dreamers who have flocked to the immense land that "cheechako's" (an "affectionate" name for those who have lived in Alaska for a little time ) and Alaskan natives alike are proud to call home.
Last summer I started to plan and dream big about a trip to Alaska. At first it was just a dream... built on things I had read, hearing stories from those who had gone, and potential collaborations on the blog. In that time I decided to commit to a cruise to Alaska and take my parents with me. It has been so fun to dream of the cruising ports we will see and visit but I was left to wonder if there was more to this amazing space of land than the ports.
This past fall I was re-introduced to this wild land when I met J. The first time that we interacted there was this air that surrounded him that was hard to put into words. It was removed from the "lower 48" (as the Alaskans term it) and there was this wildness that was there that seemed to only be able to have come from some where outside where I lived. There was a steadiness and a confidence that could easily be seen and it was one that I was slowly to learn that is deeply ingrained within the Alaskan culture. Several weeks ago I was honored to sit and listen for a couple of hours to hear about Alaska. It left me wanting more.
There is a pace of life that is slower than other parts of the US which matches the way of life. Even the path of statehood took longer than any other state with almost 90 years passing from the purchase of land to the admittance into statehood. But the word "slowness" should not be confused with anything but depth.
It is a people who have forged territory that could only be described as wild and have conquered the art of helping their neighbor as far back as its development of community. One of the most famous examples of this happened in 1925 when a serious diphtheria epidemic struck the small town of Nome, Alaska. Due to severe weather conditions planes were unable to fly in the life-saving and necessary medicine that the city needed. In true Alaska heart fashion the people of Alaska banned together and dog sled teams raced the 674 miles in a record 5 days despite the record breaking freezing temperatures. Beyond the heroism of the dogs Togo and Balto who became famous showed the story of a heart of courage in this land.
This determined attitude that never gives up is seen in the hearts of Alaskans, through this modern age where many only look to themselves. Since the early 1900s the stories haven't stopped, just increased. From stories of Alaskan Airlines participating in Operation Magic Carpet to the renowned clean up that lasted more than three years when an oil tanker ran into the reef at Prince William Sound to present day Kikkan Randall, the Olympian who gives back to the community and encourages others to experience the benefits of sports through numerous charities these few stories make up just a few of the amazing stories that come from this wild and free place.
Beyond the Northern Lights that I long to see, I dream of visiting the beauty that surrounds the history, the culture, and most of all the people that make up this wild and unique place. Perhaps most of all the research has taught me that Alaska is a place that is big for dreamers... even those like myself, dreaming of their first visit.
A huge thank you to the Alaska Tourism Board for sponsoring this series of posts about Alaska and providing the photographs and encouraging my dream of exploring Alaska.
The day started bright and early and we spent the morning at Epcot and a few moments at Magic Kingdom before heading over to Animal Kingdom. When we arrived in Animal Kingdom we headed over to the new Pandora land to get something to eat.
We ended up choosing Satu'li' Canteen (you can read more about HERE) which we all agreed was delicious. There are a couple of great things about the restaurant for those of you who are looking for some place yummy to eat in Animal Kingdom:
1. For those who are looking for some place that has a yummy and healthy fare this is a place I would definitely recommend. There are tons of choices of different healthy options that all looked yummy. You can see the menu HERE.
2. For those who have lots of dietary restrictions like myself, this place is a perfect solution for everyone. One of the things that I most appreciated about our experience here was that when I asked one of the staff members a question about one of my allergies she immediately pulled out an allergy friendly map that explained in detail every menu item and if it would be "dietary appropriate" for those who have a myriad of allergies (including dairy, corn, wheat, egg, etc.). This made it incredibly easy to choose something yummy and safe within my dietary restrictions without making a big production of anything.
3. I have to say that one of the things that I mentioned in my post, 10 Tips for enjoying Disney With a Chronic Illness, was the weather and heat factor. As I continue to heal I see all different ways that my body is healing, including the fact that this time the heat didn't bother me as much as my last trip. BUT, it was really nice that Satu'li' Canteen is an air conditioned restaurant (something that is typically only reserved for the more expensive restaurants in the Disney parks) and a sit-down restaurant. It was the perfect pick me and relaxing atmosphere to begin the afternoon portion of the day.
After lunch we walked around Pandora for a bit before heading over to Asia. Pandora looks like a completely different world. I have to admit that I have never seen Avatar, but I was so amazed by the uniqueness of everything that surrounded us - it was absolutely artistically amazing.
When we arrived in Asia we waited in line for Everst which Ali and Paul rode and really enjoyed. I should add in that if you are like me and may not be able to ride every ride due to health reasons then don't feel that you have to wait outside for your group. I see this happen a lot, but Disney is really great about this. They encourage you to spend time with your loved ones and you can easily exit (without having to go back through the whole line) when your party goes to get on a ride. I know that at some theme parks this isn't an option, but at Disney it is, and is wonderful that you don't miss out on time with people. Honestly, I love how this allowed me the opportunity to spend every second with these dear people.
Next we headed over to Kali River Rapids which was so fun Ali and I ended up riding it twice. *smiles* You do get wet but because it was such a warm day we dried very quickly and laughed throughout the whole ride.
Finally we headed back to Pandora to meet up with Paul who had kindly waited in line for us for the Na'vi River journey which had an incredibly long line. (By the time that we had gotten to Animal Kingdom all of the FastPasses for the day were taken.) We had a great time talking and hanging out as we waited for the ride... which I hate to say this but was a bit of a disappointment. Artistically it is beautiful, but just a word of warning that it is a very short ride and ... I think because I love Disney that is all I am going to say. *hahaha*.
But again... honestly, Pandora reminds me again of what I said in my last post about the day... Disney completely removes you from "the real world" in its artistic creation and beauty and honestly- there is never any disappointment in that at all. The afternoon was perfect and it was a time that I will treasure forever. I can't wait to share more with y'all about the rest of the day in the next few days!
